Inventory by weight in QuickBooks online
We are a tiny smoked seafood processor wholesaler and have been using QuickBooks Online for the last year. Recently, we upgraded to Online Pro so we could start using the inventory/sales invoicing to get a better handle on our inventory and item sales. We have products that are sold by count (4/8oz packages) and by weight (e.g. 2.56lbs).
I have come to discover that QuickBooks Online Pro cannot inventory/sell by weight (UOM), though Desktop apparently is able to do this seemingly simple feature. Our only options appears to be to add an app to Online, shift to Desktop, or find some standalone 3rd party app. I have looked at some of the apps but none seem appropriate for us, though I still have to go through all of them more carefully.
Suggestions?

Let me share how you can set up your products and sell them by count or weight, Mike-saltandsmoke.
Selling items with a unit of measure is available in QuickBooks Desktop.
In QuickBooks Online, you can use inventory items to track quantities. Or use the Bundle feature to sell products or services together as a single item.
Once you set up all your inventory products, you track them when they sell. There are two ways to track what you sell:
- Create an invoice if you’ll get paid later.
- Add a sales receipt if your customer paid on the spot.
On the other hand, you can look for a third-party app through our Intuit Marketplace. Browse this link to find applications you can use to track inventories: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/app/apps/home?categoryId=Track-Inventory. These are the apps that are already integrated with QuickBooks.
To check the status of your inventory, access reports to know what's on hand, cost of goods sold, and more.
Keep in touch with me if you need additional information about selling items by weight. I'm always right here to help you.

You need to have an inventory management app to integrate with your QBO.

I have looked through some of the available applications and dug into some of their features, specifically looking for inventory (and sales) by weight for some inventory items. Most apps appear to be targeted for online sales by item. Any suggestion of apps intended for food production and sales by weight as well as by item would be very appreciated.

Budget is about $50/seat with 3 seats needed (sales, production, and management). I am assuming that the app will integrate with the QuickBooks sales/inventory invoicing.

Other than U/M feature, the expiring dates tracking feature is crucial for your company. There are 2 apps you may compare and they support QBO. One app costs $80/month for 3 users and another app costs $140/month for 3 devices/5 users. You can purchase their annual plan to get a lower rate. Check our profile name and send your business email address in a private message. We will introduce you directly to both of them.

Thanks for joining this conversation, @gilrane. I'd be glad to provide information concerning inventory by weight in QuickBooks Online.
Consider looking for a third-party app that allows you to sell your products by count or weight. To do so, you can go to the QuickBooks Apps Center. Alternatively, you can search through the Apps menu in QBO.
Here’s how:
- On the left panel, click Apps.
- Go to the Find Apps tab.
- Use the search bar and enter the keyword to look for an app.

Additionally, I'll share with you these articles for your guide:
Please let me know if you need clarification about this, or there's anything else I can do for you. I'll be standing by for your response. Have a great day and stay safe.
