Auto closing entries are important for it use to transfer the balance from the Income and Expense accounts to Retained Earnings.
As suggested by my colleague AldrinS, you can customize and filter the expense report if you wish to disallow the Retained Earnings from showing in the report. The detailed steps are already provided above.
