"Can I get invoices to post most recent and payments to post in date order as paid intermixed with invoices. Now payments are displayed at top & inv on bottom"


Are you referring to "Invoices and Received Payments Report" in QBO?

If so, I noticed that too when they initially released this report. The report should sort as what the title of the report says — Invoices first and then Payments on those Invoices. I even send them several feedbacks during their initial release. For sure, whoever designed (or approved) this report, definitely must be clueless even on a simple accounting report.
