OK I can now answer my own question: if you just got charged for a month at a higher plan and then downgrade right after you do NOT get charged again. In fact I got a credit for the difference (possibly prorated, not sure since I did it right away). And I got the credit almost immediately. 5 stars to Intuit for making the change from Essentials to Simple quite painless.
