Learn how to request to be the primary admin or contact for a QuickBooks Online account.

During a business transition, you might need to change your Intuit Account’s primary admin or contact. This helps keep your account info secure. Here’s how.

Note: Changing the primary admin can affect your access to the following on your Intuit Account:

  • Billing
  • User management
  • Support plan
  • Bank account changes

Before you proceed, take note of the following:

  • If a money movement support issue occurs, change the role to primary admin (non-firm user).
  • If you can’t get the primary admin or contact assigned to you, proceed to the next steps.

Step 1: Check prerequisites

If you don’t have an Intuit Account yet, create one. Here are the documents that you’ll need:

  • Your driver's licence, government-issued ID, or passport.
  • If the previous owner is deceased, a notarised document with the name of the executor of their estate.
Note: The letter should say that it authorises you to be the primary admin on the account.
  • If your request requires verification from other owners or authorised parties, you’ll be asked to provide their contact information. We’ll send them a separate verification request.

Depending on the type of business, submit any of the following documents. Make sure they include the business owner’s name(s) and title(s):

Business typeDocument(s) needed
Sole proprietorshipBusiness licence
CorporationArticles of organisation, corporation bylaws, or shareholders’ agreements
Limited Liability Company (LLC)Articles of organisation or an operating agreement
Limited partnershipCertificate of limited (or limited liability) partnership
Non-profit organisationA board of trustee meeting minutes that states who the new primary admin should be.

Note: If you don’t have this, provide articles of incorporation or non-profit corporate bylaws.
Other businessArticles of organisation, articles of incorporation, corporation bylaws, or shareholders’ agreements

Notes: If this isn’t a business and you don’t manage the company file, treat the file admin as the owner.

Step 2: Complete the form

Fill out the Business Change Request form to request to be the primary admin or contact on QuickBooks.

  1. Open the Business Change Request form.
  2. Select the company you want to request primary admin or contact for.
Note: Make sure you select an answer to the questions from each â–Ľ dropdown.
  3. Select Continue.
  4. Review your business details, then select Continue. Otherwise, select This is not the right business, then go back to Step 3.
  5. Review your personal details, then select Continue.
  6. On the summary page, make sure all the info is correct. Then select Continue.
  7. Select Submit request. This sends an email to any other business owners or authorised parties regarding your request.

Step 3: Have the owner or other authorised parties submit the required documents

Advise the owner or other authorised parties that they’ll receive an email notification from no_response@intuit.com. This contains a link to our Business Change Request portal where they’ll have to do the following:

  1. Verify their identity.
  2. Upload all required documents.

Note: Owners and other authorised parties have 14-business days to verify their identity and upload all required documents. Otherwise, the system automatically declines the request and you’ll need to submit a new one.

Step 4: Wait for status updates

We’ll review your request as soon as possible and send updates to the email address you provided. You can also check the status of your request at any time.

If your request requires documents from owners or other authorised parties, you’ll see whether owner verifications are still pending.

If your request is approved

We’ll let you know that we gave you the primary admin or contact role. Just sign in with the email address you provided the next time you use QuickBooks.

If your request isn’t approved

We’ll let you know why and what steps you can take. For example, we'll tell you if a document is missing, hard to read, or doesn't meet the rules for approval. You might need to fill out the form again to send a new request.
