Discount: how to apply by single item?

Let's create a discount item, ismellus.

It seems like you already turned on the Discount feature. Let's go ahead and create a discount item. Please follow the steps below:

  1. From the Sales tab, select Product and Services.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Select either Non-inventory or Service.
  4. Name the item as Discount. It would be best to give a unique name for each item so they're easily to tell apart.
  5. In the Income account field, select Discount given.
  6. Select Non-taxable under the Sales tax category drop-down.
  7. Click Save and close.

Afterwards, you can add the discount item to an invoice.

  1. Select the + New button.
  2. Select Invoice.
  3. Select a customer.
  4. Add a PRODUCT/SERVICE, QTY, RATE, and AMOUNT.
  5. In the next line, select the discount item.
  6. Enter the discount price in the RATE column. Let's make sure that it's in a negative form.
  7. Click Save and close.

On the other hand, adding a discount item is also available in Sales receipt.

I've got your back if you still need a help when creating an invoice.

Thanks for getting back, ismellus.

We only have the option to enter the discount as another line item or at the total section. You can use the steps given by my colleague @Adrian_A which is to add another line item after a product/service. This is also a way to keep track on the discounts you've given in a transaction and customer.

You can run the account's quickreport to track it. Here's how:

  1. Select Accounting from the menu and click Chart of Accounts.
  2. Search for the Income account you used in tracking the discounts.
  3. Under the ACTION column, click Run report
  4. From the report, you can click the Customize button to add or remove filters and columns.

I'll be here if you need anything else. Have a great day!

Discount: how to apply by single item?

I to would like a line item discount.  In my case, equipment rentals, it is crucial for applying different discount amounts to different items quickly as well as tracking what each item is actually earning over the course of the year.

It appears to be in option in other countries (India) quickbooks.

Thanks

I have been searching for this feature within QB for quite some time now & could really use the ability to deduct a discount from the same line as the item it is being deducted from, not an entire separate item below.  Please include me in the feedback as a customer who is letting you know that our company would really benefit from the implementation of that feature within QB.  Thank you so much for listening to your users!

I would also REALLY like to be able to discount a line item

product - description-unit price-discount%-unit price after discount

This is a basic functionality of any accounting package and I am surprised and disappointed it is not available in QB Online.

I'll personally share your feedback with our engineers regarding your product suggestion. For now, you can set discounts for set amounts. Then, create a new product item that you can add to invoices or sales receipts.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon on the top menu.
  2. Select Products and Services.
  3. Hit New to create a new item.
  4. Select Non-inventory or Service for the type.
  5. Name the item Discount. If you want to create multiple discount items, give them unique names so they're easy to tell apart.
  6. Enter the discount as a negative amount in the Sales price/rate field. This is a dollar amount and not a percentage.
  7. Choose the Discount given account in the Income account drop-down menu. QuickBooks creates this account for you when you turn on the discount feature.
  8. From the Tax drop-down menu, select Nontaxable.
  9. Hit Save and close.

Then, apply the discount when creating an invoice or sales receipt.

Here's how:

  1. Click the + New button and select Invoice or Sales receipt.
  2. Add products and services. Then fill out the rest of the form.
  3. Add the Discount item you just created. You can adjust the discount just make sure it's a negative amount.
  4. Hit Save and close.

Any updates on discount per item column;

It is very imortant for our clients that they get their discounts as we agree.

The option to create a non-inventory seems a bit unprofessional on invoice tamplate.

Thanks in advance

Hi, @S1 professional.

Thanks for sharing how this feature can benefit businesses.

Right now, there are no updates in regards to creating discounts per item. Please know that I've already submitted feedback to our product engineers.

I'm also adding this article as a reference in giving discounts to your valued customers: Add a discount to an invoice or sales receipt in QuickBooks Online.

See this link! This feature was added by Quickbooks late last year https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-in/manage-customers-and-income/discount-by-line-item-...

Now the question is why is this not available in QBO Advanced? I really need it to be available in QBO Advanced or all QBO for that matter!

Please see this link! https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-in/manage-customers-and-income/discount-by-line-item-...

This feature should be available in QBO Advanced at the least - is there a reason there isn't? What version of Quickbooks is this link referring to?

Hello there, donsmith.

The article we've attached is for India QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced users. I'll surely send another feedback to our engineers together with this thread as their reference in implementing this feature in one of our updates. In our QuickBooks Online Blog updates are posted there. Also, notifications are sent within our QBO account. Just click the bell (notification) icon at the upper-right.

Feel free to get back to me if you need more help. Thanks!

Discount: how to apply by single item?

Hi Catherine -

Did you mean the article I attached was for India QBO? (You said the article we've attached, so I'm not sure what article you are referencing) It seems like it would be fairly easy to implement line item discounts in the US version if the code already exists in the India version. Can I buy the QBO Advanced India version and use it in the United States? Is there any way to know how long it might be until this might get implemented in the US version? Thanks!!

Discount: how to apply by single item?

Hello donsmith,

Yes, my colleague Catherine_B was referring to this article: Discount by line item on invoices and sales receipts. The instructions on this article was for QuickBooks Online India, and the Item-wise discount column is not yet available in the U.S. version.

Also, we're unable to get a time frame of when the option will be implemented. We always update QuickBooks and this option might be included in the future. You can always visit our blog here: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/blog/ to see the new updates.

Please don't hesitate to comment on this thread if you have additional suggestions or other concern. Thanks.

Discount: how to apply by single item?

Hi there, donsmith,

We recommend QuickBooks Online (QBO) users to use a version where their business is located for tax purposes. Also, some features are available in India (like discount by line item), but not in US.

QBO is available in many countries around the world. For the most current information, visit https://quickbooks.intuit.com/choose-country/ and choose yours.

To discount invoices and sales receipts, use links below to see the comparison based on the version of the product:

QBO US: Add a discount to an invoice or sales receipt

QBO India: Discount by line item on invoices and sales receipts.

Let me know if you have follow-up questions. Just tag my name and I'll get back to you.

Thank you and stay safe!

We are considering transfering from Xero to QBO, however this is currently the dealbreaker.

Hello, RTASam.

I'd be glad to provide you some insights regarding the process of transferring your data from Xero to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

The following information that can be imported to QBO includes Customers, Vendors, Accounts and Products and Services. When importing, you'll need to have a supported file compatible to QuickBooks. You can either use CSV or XLS/XLSX.

To ensure you use the supported file to import information to QBO, I recommend you get in touch with the technical support from Xero.

Let me provide you this article which will help you know more about the process of converting data into QBO: Common questions about importing data to QuickBooks Online.

You can always get back to me if you have any other questions about transferring your data. Just leave a reply below and I'll get back to you.

Please can you add me as a uk user of qbo who also wants to be able to show discounts on a single line item. I need to be able to discount parts for certain customers but not my labour charge and currently cannot do that. Which is infuriating as it’s such standard practice.

Hello there, @Gavwatts.

Rest assured that we've forwarded this to our product engineers so this may be considered in the future.

I'll take note of this feature request so this will be considered in a future enhancement.

However, you can check our QuickBooks Blog page to know the latest news and release in QuickBooks.

I'm always available here to answer your questions, so feel free to reach out. Take care and thanks for coming to the Community.

Thanks for starting this thread @ismellus

Please add me to the chorus of QBO users who want this functionality ported to their country's version. We have different maximum discounts for items depending on their function/price. It is both a pain and increases the likelihood of mistakes if I have to do this separately by hand.

The code is obviously already written if QBO India has it. Please put this functionality in the next update.

Ditto.  We need this functionality and it was a complete surprise when we transitioned to QBO from Desktop that it was not an existing feature.  This is not a tall ask -- every tool that generates quotes should have this.  Please escalate this for the U.S. version as it was implemented for QBO India.

Discount: how to apply by single item?

Hi @epiq1,

I hear you. This feature would allow you to enter discounts to each line item, instead of the total amount showing on the invoice.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) keeps evolving to serve our customers better. Given that this feature is unavailable at this time, I suggest submitting feedback, which goes directly to our product developers. With that said, the more users are looking for a specific feature, the higher their chance of being implemented.

Let me show you how:

  1. Go to your Gear icon.
  2. Select Feedback.

Be as detailed as you'd like on your feedback. This will help our product developers on how a certain feature can be implemented within the product.

Once done, keep an eye out on this page: The QuickBooks Blog. It's where you can see a list of updates for QBO that are rolled out each month.

If you have other questions, place them below. I'll be sure to get back to you.
