New financial year

Hi,

I want to clarify the process of starting a new financial year (which begins here in Uganda on 1 July 2021).

According to the QB help system, "In QuickBooks, you do not need to manually close your books of accounts and start a new financial year. QuickBooks will automatically commence the next financial year based on this setting [the financial year]."

However, I have also come across this advice (https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-za/year-end-processes/year-end-guide-and-checklist/00...) which appears to suggest that I must close my books to start the new financial year.

So, can you please clarify if the advice from the QB Help system is indeed correct?

And, am I correct in thinking that I would only need to close the books for the current financial year to prevent changes to that data?

Many thanks,

Andy

New financial year

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, @Biocyclic.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), closing your books will prevent doing changes in your past transactions. This is usually done when you reach the end of an accounting period to prepare to file your tax returns. For more info about this, please see this article: Close your books in QuickBooks Online.

Then, in starting your fiscal year, you'll need to set up the first month of your financial year. To guide you with the process, check out this link: QuickBooks Online year-end guide and checklist.

In case there are changes you need to do with your closed books, such as edit the closing date or you've forgotten your password, no worries because QBO will let you edit both.

If there is anything else you need to know about closing your books in QBO, please let me know in the comment section below. I'll be always here to lend a hand. Have a good one.

First of all, if your company is located in Uganda, you should use QBO Global version for Uganda, not QBO South Africa version.

then you may close your book later with the following reference
