I was curious, I've seen a couple of different posts articles online about COS or COGS, but I'd like to hear more opinions and ideas. We are a custom software development company providing services, I've never tracked COGS but want to get started doing it. However, I'm not certain how deep to go with it. We have sales people and admin people, so I know they are not in that category, but how deep do I go with the people doing the work? Salaries Retirement Matches Taxes Insurance Hardware Software ??? To get started, should I just track Payroll related items as COGS? I also assume I'd want to break it out based on Revenue Groupings? e.g. Wages : Development and Wages : Design and Wages : ??? Thanks.
