Pittsburgh Entrepreneur Barks Up the Right Tree for Marketing Boost

Some businesses go to the dogs unintentionally. But Shauna Caudill’s operation went there purposefully from the start: The canine-loving entrepreneur turned her passion for pooches into a potentially profitable enterprise in Pittsburgh.

“I have always loved dogs and been involved in rescuing dogs and helping them live great lives,” Caudill says. “I was a pharmaceutical representative for the past 14 years, but the field has changed immensely. I used to gain great satisfaction from knowing I was helping patients live better lives, but … with all the [recent] changes in health care and health care systems, I felt my ability to make a difference was muted.”

Caudill realized how much she would enjoy owning and operating her own business while pursuing an MBA at the Jack Welch Management Institute at Strayer University. “One night, I was talking to my best friend about what a pain it is to get our dogs groomed, and what an inferior job we get for what we pay,” she recalls.

During the conversation, Caudill decided that she could provide better, more convenient mobile services. And so Bow Wow! Mobile Bath and Grooming was born. The enterprise officially opened for business last week.

Poised for Success

“Over the past six months, while earning my MBA, raising our five kids, and working my pharmaceutical sales job, I actively earned my professional dog-grooming certification from Diamond Cut Dog Grooming School,” Caudill says.

Although Pennsylvania doesn’t require dog groomers to get certified, Caudill says a license gives her an added level of professionalism and expertise — the kind she’d expect from a groomer.

To get the word out about her pooch-pampering services, Caudill could use some marketing assistance. That’s what led her to enter QuickBooks’ Small Business Local Buzz campaign.

“The QuickBooks Buzz Building prize could help Bow Wow! Mobile Bath and Grooming grow and expand to become the desired dog grooming experience,” she notes in her entry.

This week, Caudill was rewarded for barking up QuickBooks’ tree: Her small business is the latest winner of a customized marketing package worth $5,000.

“Thank you immensely for this opportunity! I am grateful!” she says. “I am hoping I can reach a ton of people and generate 100 or more appointments from the marketing package from QuickBooks. I also hope to get a lot of buzz on Facebook and get people talking about Bow Wow!”
