Does your Business need Social Media?

By Peter Zurcher November 8, 2019

The short answer is yes. The real question is how can you use social media to increase your brand awareness and drive sales. From Facebook to Twitter, each social media platform has its own unique set of rules and best practices. While it takes time and dedication to maintain your social media platforms, there’s no doubt that social media has the potential to seriously grow your online presence. So where do you start?

Create a social media plan

There are so many social platforms – it seems like there’s a new one almost every other week. Instead of getting lost or overwhelmed by the amount of work you have to do, figure out which social media platforms are going to work best for your business. While it’s a good idea to create accounts on the most popular social platforms, so others don’t take your business name, you may want to focus on updating just a few of them regularly.

Many small business owners are so busy with the day-to-day running of their business, that they just don’t have time to deal with social media. However, if you choose just 1-3 platforms to focus on and update them just a few times a week, it’ll be a great start to get your business thriving online. With many social media scheduling tools available, it doesn’t have to be a time-intensive task. Eventually, as your business grows and you can see online potential, you could consider hiring a social media manager or virtual assistant part-time.

Which platforms should I use?

It can be daunting to enter the world of social media, especially as a small business owner. To help you get started, here are four popular social media platforms that may benefit your business.

Facebook

These days, most businesses will benefit from a Facebook page. Your audience may look to your Facebook page to check for your address or store opening hours, especially around long weekend and public holidays. It’s also a great place for any announcements, such as sale alerts or product notifications. Customers can also leave reviews on your Facebook page which can really help to build credibility and trust online.

Instagram

If you’re a visual brand, you may benefit from developing your Instagram presence. Perfect for fashion brands or those selling physical products, you can use your photography and video content to build an audience through Instagram and Instagram stories. You also direct people back to your website to help increase sales and brand awareness.

Pinterest

Similar to Instagram, Pinterest is based on visual content so suits brands and business that have strong visual imagery. However, even if you don’t feel your product or service would benefit from the Pinterest platform, you could use it to direct people to your blog – if you have one. You can create pinnable images using an easy-to-use design platform, such as Canva, to get more people clicking to your site. When used correctly, Pinterest can be a huge source of website traffic.

Twitter

While Twitter is far more popular in the United States than Singapore, your business still may benefit from having a Twitter account. It’s another platform to showcase your expertise, and increase your brand awareness. Similar to Facebook, you can use it to keep your audience up-to-date or send traffic to your website or blog. It can also be a great place to engage with your customers directly.
