Frequently asked questions
Does it matter if I record my income and expenses on an accrual or cash basis? At the moment, QuickBooks Self-Employed only works on a cash basis – recording income and expenses when you receive or pay money. QuickBooks Online Simple Start, Essentials and Plus all support both cash and accrual accounting (recording income and expenses when you get a bill or raise and invoice). But you can’t calculate Self Assessment on those plans.
Can I manage my VAT with QuickBooks? Not with QuickBooks Self Employed. You can track your VAT then prepare and submit your return to HMRC using any one of the QuickBooks Online plans: Simple Start, Essential and Plus. But if you’re looking for Self Assessment calculations, you’ll need to use QuickBooks Self-Employed.
I work in construction. Does QuickBooks have what I need?If you need to manage Construction Industry Scheme obligations (CIS) try our QuickBooks Online plans: Simple Start, Essentials and Plus. These plans don’t support HMRC’s Self Assessment right now.
Can I import data from my spreadsheets directly into QuickBooks?Yes. You can import Customer, Supplier, Items, and Chart of Accounts from an Excel spreadsheet in several ways.
I need to complete a Self Assessment. Which plan is right for me?You can prepare Self-Assessment tax returns in our QuickBooks Self-Employed. At the moment we only support SA103S, the self-employment form – not partnerships, property income or capital gains.
Can I work with my accountant in QuickBooks Self-Employed?Of course. It’s easy to invite them to access your QuickBooks account. Need to find an accountant? Check out our searchable directory.
If I need different features can I upgrade? You can’t instantly upgrade from QuickBooks Self-Employed to one of our QuickBooks Online products. But if you’d like to switch, just contact us and we can move your data over for you.
