A local West Midlands coffee retailer and barista training academy, Boo Boo Coffee, has been awarded the Small Business Big Success competition prize at Monday night’s event hosted by Intuit Quickbooks at the West Bromwich Albion FC stadium in Birmingham.

The Harborne based local business will now receive a prize package worth over £15,000 that includes £5,000 in cash, a full page article in the Birmingham Post, match-day advertising at The Hawthorns during the West Bromwich Albion versus Queens Park Rangers Premier League fixture in April, hospitality tickets to the match and free QuicksBooks Online subscription for two years.

Helping young talent

The owners, Keon Heidarinia and Matt Eagles, combine their strong passion for the coffee industry with their desire to help local young talent to develop their skills in the sector, in effect, giving them a skill for life. They plan to use the cash element of the prize package to support the further development of their young team, putting them through focussed training alongside the coffee business.

“We believe this will truly help us to extend our reach in the local community beyond simply making a profit, which is incredibly important to us”, says Keon.

“We took an empty shell of a shop and transformed it into a bustling hub for the area with our bare heads, employing local people and local artists and serving the local community with great coffee. To have that achievement formally recognised by a global brand is a huge accolade for us.”

Work ethic

The competition judges – QuickBooks’ Vice President and Country Manager, Rich Preece, Adrian Wright, Marketing Director at West Bromwich Albion Football Club and Stacey Barnfield, Editor, Birmingham Post – were impressed with the duo’s brilliant work ethic, savvy business minds and their efforts to create a true community hub.

The Small Business Big Success competition was launched in conjunction with the Birmingham Post and Mail. The competition aimed to find the best small business success stories in the West Midlands, a process that uncovered a long list of inspiring achievements from lots of SME entries, making it clear why Birmingham has emerged as a new hot spot for entrepreneurs to start their business.
