There are over 4.6 million self-employed workers in the UK, many of whom are facing one of the most stressful weeks of their working year this week thanks to the self-assessment tax return deadline on Friday. That’s why we want to celebrate the efforts of these hard-working individuals, who currently account for an incredible two-thirds of new jobs since 2008.
These on-demand entrepreneurs are providing us with products and services that are changing the way we shop, travel and manage our day-to-day lives. As an example, Airbnb and Etsy have revolutionised the marketplaces for travel accommodation and shopping by using the power of individual entrepreneurs to create business “entities” that are now competing with some of the largest traditional companies in their fields.
The individual entrepreneurs that are turning their skills and assets into a business are disrupting whole industries and redefining what it means to be an entrepreneur. They are also having a major impact on the UK economy, adding an estimated £500 million a year to the pot – a figure that could rise to a whopping £9 billion a year in the next ten years, according to PWC estimates.
Our campaign, which launches today, aims to educate about this new type of worker and highlight the contributions they make. We’ll also be hosting a social media competition for a chance to win amazing prizes, ranging from flower bouquets and craft beers, to tickets to see Aston Villa FC take on Sunderland at the end of August.
The competition is open to anyone working for themselves in the UK. To enter we’re simply asking you to show or tell us why you love being self-employed. Find the full details on how to enter on our Twitter or Facebook channels.
