Transfer QuickBooks Desktop 2020 to QuickBooks Online

Hello,

My client has purchased QuickBooks Pro Desktop 2020 - on disk. Is there any chance to transfer

the license from desktop to online, without any further cost ?  I am not talking about the data transfer, that part I can handle. It is just the cost/fee of the product. Thanks

Transfer QuickBooks Desktop 2020 to QuickBooks Online

Hello akhtar24,

 

It's great to hear from you again and it's awesome that you're working to get your client set up using QuickBooks Online! Being familiar with how to migrate from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online is a useful skill, but I see how this situation is different. I'm happy to go over QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online accounts and purchasing options.

 

As you know, when you purchase QuickBooks Desktop, you receive a license and product number. Those numbers are specific to that version and edition of QuickBooks Desktop. QuickBooks Online accounts are completely separate from Desktop's licenses, meaning that there isn't a way to transfer the license your client purchased to the QuickBooks Online platform to use for that subscription.

 

In addition to the difference I outlined above, QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online also have separate billing systems and subscriptions cannot be transferred between the two.

 

The options in this instance vary depending on how your client purchased the QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2020. If they purchased it from Intuit directly, I recommend getting in touch with the QuickBooks Desktop support team to discuss a possible refund. To reach that team, your client can follow the information outlined in the Intuit QuickBooks Desktop software support policies article.

 

If your client purchased Desktop from a third-party retailer, it's important that they try to return the product to get a refund from them first. If the retailer refuses the refund, your client can then try the steps in the Return QuickBooks Desktop for a refund article.

 

When ready, your client can visit QuickBooks Online's Plans & Pricing page to choose from one of the three QuickBooks Online options. Please note that QuickBooks Self-Employed is separate from QuickBooks Online. If your client purchased a license of QB Desktop on disc, it sould be a one time license. If they prefer using QB Online, ensure they will purchase the subscription fee.
