bring the invoice up on screen and change the date

As Rustler said, you should be able to change the date on the invoice, by re-opening the invoice, changing the date; and using Save and Close.
You mentioned the invoice is being paid by DD? Is this being done through GoCardless that's linked with QuickBooks?
