GST Number Search By Name

Currently, the GST portal does not offer the facility to search the GST number by name. Earlier, this facility was provided on the portal, but now such a functionality has been discontinued. A taxpayer can search for a GST number using GSTIN/UIN or the PAN of the registered taxpayer he wishes to search.

What is GST Number?

Every business entity needs to obtain a unique number under GST registration to collect tax and avail input tax credit. This is called Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN). This number is a 15 digit alpha – numeric number that is based on PAN of a given taxpayer.

Therefore CGST Act 2017 makes it mandatory for the following persons to get registered under GST and obtain GSTIN .

  • individuals or entities having an aggregate turnover of more than 40 lakh rupees in case of goods
  • entities or individuals having an aggregate turnover of more than 20 lakh rupees in case of services
  • individuals or entities having an aggregate turnover of more than Rs. 20 lakhs for supply of goods in case of hilly or north-eatern states.

Furthermore, registration under GST is not tax specific. This means that a single registration is needed for CGST, SGST/UTGST. This is unlike the previous indirect tax regime where a taxpayer had to take multiple registration numbers pertaining to different indirect tax laws like excise, service tax and VAT.

Also, business entities having branches in multiple states need to take GSTINs state wise. However, a business entity having varied branches within a given state need to apply for single GSTIN .

Under this case, such a business can declare one place as the principal place of business and the other places as additional places of business. But, a business entity having varied business verticals in a given state may have to apply for different GSTINs for each business verticals.

GST Number Format

GSTIN is a 15 digit alpha – numeric number which is PAN based allocated to every registered person under GST. This number is unique to every legal person including individual, partnership, LLP, association of persons or body of individuals, company etc.

The structure of GSTIN is as follows:

  • The first two characters of the GSTIN indicate the code number of a specific state.
  • The next 10 characters indicate the PAN of the taxpayer. However, a non-resident taxable person can register using Tax Identification Number (TAN).
  • Thirteenth character of the GSTIN is an alpha-numeric number which denotes the number of registrations the given entity or person has within the state of a given PAN.
  • Fourteenth character, by default, is ‘Z’ which is kept blank for future use.
  • Lastly, the fifteenth character is alpha-numeric known as the check code. It can either be a digit or alphabet added to a series of characters in order to detect errors.

For example, in GSTIN 06 BBBBB1111B 1 Z E

  • 06 – is state code of Haryana
  • BBBBB1111B – represents PAN
  • 1 – indicates number of branches within a state
  • Z – by default
  • E – check code
