When you move to a city temporarily for college or a short work stint, finding the right furniture can be difficult and the process of shifting furniture between cities can be expensive and problematic. From a family in the furniture industry, Neerav Jain looked to innovate within the space of furniture rentals and Cityfurnish was born. Cityfurnish offers its customers contemporary and modern styles at affordable prices with convenient service. We chat with Neerav about this venture.
An excerpt from the interview:
- What made you start your venture?
The idea of Cityfurnish originated when I was studying in Delhi University and had to move my furniture to Delhi and shift back after my graduation. The process was long drawn out and extremely painful, to say the least. The experience left me looking for a solution and we started working on Cityfurnish in September 2015. By the end of September, we were live in the market offering 50+ rentals.
- What has been the key to your business’s success?
Cityfurnish is revolutionising the on-demand rental industry in India. We help consumers by fulfilling their temporary furnishing needs, be it for the home or the office. By offering premium solid wooden furniture and branded appliances, we are making renting cool, enabling us to target millennials. Our managed inventory model helps us furnish to create customer’s delight while keeping us asset-light.
The main difference between us and the competitors in the market would be the approach towards shared economy. Our focus it to provide superior service and products with complete furniture range in Solid Sheesham Wood and make the customer experience exceed expectations on all counts. A fine balance between inventory and the marketplace model has been the key to succeed in the shared economy.
- What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them?
We have competitors in both the online and offline segment. While the offline market is unorganised and scattered, there are many online competitors. We believe that our model of managed inventory enables us to have strict quality control while keeping the business asset light. This has given us a huge operations advantage.
- Do you have a mentor who guides/advices you on matters of the business?
We are blessed to have mentors like Jitendra Gupta(CitrusPay), Rahul Singh (Beer Café) and Manoj Gupta(Credit Suisse) who have shared their advice and experience.
- Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology for your regular operations?
We rely on Googlesheets for MIS and Slack for our team communication along with custom software for inventory management. These technologies have helped us get better organized and made tracking different activities much more effective and efficient.
- What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction & Expansion?
We are a customer facing company and we ensure that all our members of our team including delivery personnel provide the best service experience. To keep a check, we have a created a strong feedback and testimonial system. Our recently launched Referral program as an addition to the customer experience expansion.
- What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Three Ds, I believe have a strong impact on success, they are Determination, Dedication and Discipline.
