How to Structure Your Website

2 min read

Your company’s website is the biggest and most immediate source of information about what you do for your clients. Therefore, it is important to build a website structure that makes it easier for visitors to find the information they seek. This involves taking into consideration various aspects of the website that need to be in place. For example, the website’s design and ease of use, responsiveness for viewing on mobiles and other devices, conforming to SEO guidelines and so on. Here are some of the ways in which one can build a website structure for SEO and other necessary components: 1. Have easy-to-use navigation: One of the most fundamental points to consider for the website structure is to create an easy-to-navigate experience. The sitemap needs to be well thought-out in terms of how the various pages are interlinked, and should make it easy for users to find their way through the website and get the information they are looking for. This begins with arranging the top level navigation and organizing it well, before getting to the inner pages. 2. Choose the right CMS: A content management system (CMS) like WordPress or Drupal will enable you to use a template that is accessible and customizable. Use the content guidelines in these CMSes before you design the content and keep it in mind while designing or using plugins and widgets as well. 3. Name your links well: When you include links in your content, ensure that they are descriptive and provide clarity that there will be more information when the user clicks through. It is generally not advised to use phrases like ‘click here’. Instead, use phrases and sentences that set a proper context so the user knows they can click to read more. This is one of the basic features to build a good website structure for SEO purposes as well. 4. Make forms accessible: Wherever your website requires a user to fill out a form, ensure that it is clear to understand. Each field needs to have a label defining what needs to be filled there, and should be placed prominently either within the text box or next to it. Including a captcha is also important in order to keep out spam bots. Always have a clear call-to-action as well for the user to click on to submit the form. 5. Use the right heading tags: A website structure for SEO adherence must use the right heading tags. Structure your website content by using h1 heading tags only for titles of individual pages and the title of the website. Use h2 and h3 for other parts of the content such as sub-headings and highlighted sections. 6. Remember that less is more: Avoid using very lengthy or flowery content; the key here is to put your point across as easily as possible. ‘Less is more’ is a good principle to have when it comes to a website structure. The more content there is and the more complicated getting to the inner pages is, the worse it will be as an experience for the user. Highlight important parts of the content on the homepage, and ensure that it is readable. Finally, building a good website structure for SEO as well as for a better overall user experience takes a lot of careful effort. The above are the basic guidelines that will enable you to get started and ensure that your website is easy to navigate, is well-designed, and explains what you do to your end user.
