Change the customer assigned to a project in QuickBooks Online

Learn how to change the customer assigned to a project and all its transactions in QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced.

You can change the customer assigned to an existing QuickBooks Online project to a different one. This also changes each invoice and estimate in the project to match, so think carefully before you do so. However, this doesn't automatically send notices to any new customers.

Prerequisites

  • By default, projects is already turned on in QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced. If projects is not turned on:
    1. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Account & settings.
    2. Select Advanced, then ✎ Edit in the Projects section.
    3. Turn on Organize all job-related activity in one place (Take me there).
    4. Select Save, then Done.
  • You must have created at least one project.

Change the customer assigned to a project

Think carefully before you change the customer assigned to a project.

  1. Go to Projects (Take me there).
  2. Find and select the project you want to change the assigned customer for.
  3. Select Edit.
  4. Select the new customer from the Customer ▼ dropdown.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Review the prompt, then select Assign new customer.

Post requisites

If you have any unpaid invoices or pending estimates, send them to the new customer.
