Hi everyone,
Client moved from AB to BC in 2019 and have unclaimed tuition carry forward from AB, but I don't know how to claim it in Profile.
I claimed it on the BCS11, but CRA rejected it.
It looks like I need to fill out another form in Profile for interprovincial tuition transfer.
I appreciate any comment.
Thanks.
Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
There is not an inter-provincial transfer form in ProFile. Generally it is not possible use an s11 for a province other than the s11 for the province of residence; so BCS11 for a BC resident.
Maybe CRA can explain why it was rejected.
Hope this helps
Thanks. I called CRA and they have changed the rule last year, no provincial transfer are allowed in BC.
British Columbia
British Columbia has eliminated its tuition and education amounts for years after 2018.
Students who have unused tuition and education tax credits from 2018 and prior tax years, will still be able to claim them in 2019 or carry them forward to future tax years.
Individuals who move to British Columbia from other provinces or territories after December 31, 2018, will no longer be able to claim their accumulated tuition and education tax credits in British Columbia.
Hi Kevin,
I have a similar situation, when you spoke to CRA did they mention whether the AB unused tuition credit would still show up somewhere on her 2020 NOA? I'm wondering, if they moved back to AB at some point in the future, would they then be able to claim them? My wife has unused tuition credit she carried over from 2019, we moved to BC from AB in 2020, and we are encountering a similar situation
Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
There is not an inter-provincial tuition transfer form. The provincial tuition credit can only be claimed on the provincial S11 for the December 31 province of residence. Provinces have their own rules for inter-provincial transfers and these have changed now that some provinces have eliminated the provincial tuition credit. It would be best to check with CRA for the rules in your province of residence.
Hope this helps
Hi Duncan, thank you for the response
So given that I can't claim my wife's unused AB provincial tuition credit on our 2020 tax return because we resided in AB on Dec 31, 2019, is there a way for us to carry it forward so if we moved back to AB at some point in the future she could claim it then? I understand that we can't transfer the credit from AB to BC, but want to know if there's a way to keep it dormant until we are able to use it
Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
The tuition carry forward should be on CRA's records until they are used: but, confirm with CRA. There is not a request to carryforward tuition form in ProFile
Hope this helps
