Add medical expenses in Pro Tax

SOLVEDby QuickBooks5Updated January 29, 2024

Taxpayers can claim medical expenses for any 12-month period that ends in the current tax year. Expenses already claimed on last year's tax return cannot be claimed again. Generally, all amounts paid can be claimed even if they were not paid in Canada.

Open the Medical Expense form

  1. Open the return in Pro Tax.
  2. Select Add New Form at the bottom of the left-side menu bar. The search window displays.
  3. Enter the term “medical” in the search field; “Medical expenses” displays in the search results.
  4. Select the Add button next to “Medical expenses”. The “Medical expenses” option populates in the list of forms.
  5. Select the Insert forms button.

Note: If this is a coupled return the Medical Expense form in Pro Tax automatically shares information between coupled returns.

Claim medical expenses

Enter information for the taxpayer, the spouse (or common-law partner) and dependent children on the Medical Expense form; the data flows to line 330 and 331 of the T1 return.

Optimize medical expenses

The Medical Expense form automatically shares information between coupled returns.

To optimize medical expenses, answer Yes to the question "Optimize medical expenses?" at the top of the form.

Pro Tax will determine which taxpayer should claim the deduction at lines 330 and 331, according to the lowest net income (provided the taxpayer can claim all expenses).
