Learn how to create subaccounts in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.
This helps you keep your chart of accounts organised and create more detailed reports.
Create a new subaccount
In Quickbooks Online, you can create a subaccount under a parent account. This lets you break down your income, expenses, and other account types.
Note: You can create up to five subaccounts under one parent account.
Here’s how to get started:
- Go to Settings , then select Chart of accounts (Take me there).
- Select New.
- Enter an Account name.
- Select an Account type, and then select the Detail type from the dropdowns.
Find out more about detail types. - Check Make this a subaccount, then select the Parent account it should be under.
Find out more about parent accounts and subaccounts. - If you select Cash and cash equivalents, Assets, Credit Card, Liabilities, or Equity account, enter Opening Balance, and fill out the starting date in the As of field.
- (Optional) Add a Description to add extra information about this account.
- Select Save.
Change an existing account into a subaccount
- Go to Settings , then select Chart of accounts (Take me there).
- Find the account you want to edit.
- In the Action column, select the Account history menu▼. Then, select Edit.
- Check Make this a subaccount, then select the Parent account it should be under.
- Select Save.
