Upgrade or downgrade your QuickBooks Online subscription

Learn how to change your plan level to get more or fewer accounting features.

We want to help you find the best accounting tools for your business. As your business grows, QuickBooks grows with you. When you're ready for more features, it's easy to upgrade your subscription level. Or, if your current subscription isn't a good fit, we can help you switch to a different plan. Here’s how to upgrade or downgrade your QuickBooks Online subscription.

Step 1: Choose a new plan

Check out the availible plans to see which subscription level is right for you.

Step 2: Upgrade your subscription

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online as a master or company admin.
  2. Select Settings ⚙ and then Account and settings.
  3. Select the Billing & Subscription tab.
  4. Make sure your payment info is up-to-date.
  5. In the QuickBooks Online section, select Upgrade your plan.
  6. Review the available plans and then select Choose plan.
  7. Follow the on-screen steps to upgrade your plan.

Downgrade your subscription

Before you downgrade, make sure you aren't losing any essential features. Also keep in mind that downgrading removes any discounts on your current plan.

Step 1: Choose a new plan

Check out the availible plans to see which subscription level is right for you.

Step 2: Turn off features in your current plan

Before you downgrade, you may need to turn off some features. If you use any of these features, follow the steps in the section:

Pause recurring transaction templates

If you need to switch to QuickBooks Online Simple Start, turn off your recurring transaction templates first. This plan doesn’t support recurring transactions:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Recurring Transactions.
  2. Select a template. Then select the Edit ▼ dropdown.
  3. Select Pause and then Pause again to confirm.

Remove extra users

You may need to remove users depending on the plan you downgrade to. Learn more about .

Learn more about multi-currency

QuickBooks Online Simple Start doesn’t support multi-currency. If you currently use the multi-currency feature, you won’t be able to switch to QuickBooks Simple Start.

Turn off inventory

If you need to switch to QuickBooks Online Simple Start or Essentials, make your inventory items inactive. These subscription levels don't support inventory tracking. Only QuickBooks Online Plus lets you track inventory.

Step 1: Save your financial reports
Run a report of all your products or services so you have a record of your current quantities on-hand:

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Search for and open the Product/Service List report.
  3. Select Customise.
  4. Select the Filter ▼ section.
  5. In the Deleted ▼ dropdown, select All.
  6. Select Run report.
  7. Print or export your report.

Step 2: Deactivate your inventory

When you downgrade, your inventory items’ quantities reset to zero. Your items stay in QuickBooks, but you won't track the quantity on-hand anymore:

  1. Go to the Sales menu and select the Products and Services tab.
  2. Select the Filter icon.
  3. In the Status ▼ dropdown, select All.
  4. In the Type ▼ dropdown, select Inventory.
  5. Select Apply. This shows all your inventory items and hides the non-inventory items you'll keep.
  6. Select the checkbox next to the Name column. This selects all the inventory items on the list.
  7. Select Batch actions ▼ dropdown and then select Make inactive.
  8. Select Yes.

Your inventory items are now inactive and won't show up on your Product and Services list anymore.

Cancel third-party apps
Are you currently using any connected third-party apps? You may need to cancel them if your new plan no longer supports them.

Step 3: Downgrade your plan

After you turn off features you won't use in your new plan, you can downgrade:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Account and Settings.
  2. Select Billing & Subscription. Make sure your payment info is up-to-date.
  3. Select Downgrade your plan. If you can’t see this option, follow this link to downgrade.
  4. Select Choose Plan.
  5. Review what's changing with your new plan.
  6. When you're ready, select Continue or Submit.
  7. Review the billing details.
  8. Select Change plan, then Done.

Once you've turned off what you need to, you can downgrade your plan:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online as a master or company admin.
  2. Select Settings ⚙ and then Account and settings.
  3. Select the Billing & Subscription tab.
  4. Make sure your payment info is up-to-date.
  5. In the QuickBooks Online section, select Downgrade your planNote: If you can’t see this option, follow this link to downgrade.
  6. Review the available plans and then select Choose Plan.
  7. Follow the on-screen steps to downgrade your plan.

Your plan should change immediately. To check your current plan level:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online as a master or company admin.
  2. Select Settings ⚙ and then Account and settings.
  3. Select the Billing & Subscription tab.
  4. Review your plan in the QuickBooks section.

Switch back to your previous subscription

If you decide to go back to your old subscription level, remember to turn features back on. Your inventoryrecurring transaction templates, and apps won't turn on automatically.
