Learn how to upgrade to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop from within the program.
If you need to upgrade QuickBooks Pro, Premier, or Enterprise, we’ll show you how. If you want to buy QuickBooks, select the QuickBooks best for you. After you buy QuickBooks, you can start the upgrade tool.
Upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop subscription
When a new version of QuickBooks is available, you'll get a message when you open QuickBooks. We make it simple for you to upgrade.
- When you’re ready, select Upgrade Now.
- Select Keep old version on my computer if you want to keep your current QuickBooks. Then select Let’s go. QuickBooks downloads, installs, and activates the new version for you. It updates your company file(s).
- When the upgrade is done, select Open QuickBooks.
Note: The upgrade may take some time. It depends on your internet speed and size of your company file(s).
If you don’t see a prompt to upgrade your QuickBooks subscription
Bring back all one time messages
If you don't get a prompt to upgrade, change your one time message prompts.
- Go to Edit, and then select Preferences.
- Select General, and then select My Preferences.
- Select Bring back all one time messages and then OK.
- Close, then reopen QuickBooks. You’ll have the prompt to upgrade your QuickBooks subscription.
You can get the latest version of QuickBooks desktop from the QuickBooks Desktop Manager. You can select and install all your QuickBooks products.
Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop without a subscription
If you don’t see a prompt to upgrade, don’t worry. It means you made a one-time purchase of QuickBooks. You can upgrade with the easy upgrade tool. Here’s how.
- Select Help, and then Upgrade QuickBooks.
- Select the version you want to upgrade to, then select Upgrade Now.
- You can keep a copy of your current version of QuickBooks. Select Keep old version on my computer, then select Let’s go.
QuickBooks downloads, installs, and activates the new version for you. It updates your company file(s).
Upgrade tool can't find my QuickBooks Desktop purchase
Find and enter your license number
If you don't get a prompt to choose a new QuickBooks version, you’ll need to enter your QuickBooks license info. This happens when you buy QuickBooks with a different email than you use for your QuickBooks Desktop account. Here’s what to do.
- Find the purchase confirmation email from QuickBooks.
- Enter the License Number and Product Number, then select Continue to finish the upgrade.
To find your license info, sign in to the customer account maintenance portal (CAMPs).
You can get the latest version of QuickBooks desktop from the QuickBooks Desktop Manager. You can select and install all your QuickBooks products.
Upgrade QuickBooks within the Right Networks hosting environment
As the account owner or admin, you can install QuickBooks for yourself or others. If you're a standard user, you can only install QuickBooks for yourself.
Install QuickBooks for Right Network account owners and admins:
- Sign in to Right Networks My account with your email address and password.
- Select Users.
- Select the specific user you want to apply the license to.
- Within the user detail page, select Apps you can install.
Note: Right Networks displays all QuickBooks versions available to you. Use the search bar to quickly find the version. - Select the correct QuickBooks version, then select Install. Once it installs, you'll get a prompt and you'll see a shortcut on your desktop.
The user may need to sign off and on again to access the new QuickBooks installation.
Install QuickBooks for Right Networks standard users:
- Sign in to Right Networks My account with your email address and password.
- Select Apps you can install.
- Use the search bar to quickly find the QuickBooks version you need to install, then select the app.
- Select Install App. Once it installs, you'll get a prompt and you'll see a shortcut on your desktop.
The next time you sign in to the remote environment using your email address and password, you'll see QuickBooks on your desktop. If you don't see it, try re-adding the app. You may need to sign off and on again to access the new QuickBooks installation.
