This helps you keep your chart of accounts organized and create more detailed reports.
Create a new subaccount
In Quickbooks Online, you can create a subaccount under a parent account. This lets you break down your income, expenses, and other account types.
Note: You can create up to five subaccounts under one parent account.
Here’s how to get started:
- Go to Settings , then select Chart of Accounts.
- Select New. Depending on your account view, you’ll either see the New account or the Account panel.
Create a subaccount in the Account panel
- In the Account Type ▼ dropdown, select the account type.
- In the Detail Type ▼ dropdown, select the detail type.
- Enter the name of the account, then add a description.
- Select the Is sub-account checkbox, then enter the parent account in the Enter parent account ▼ dropdown.
- Select the start date of your opening balance in the ▼ dropdown. Then, enter your opening balance in the Account balance field.
- Select Save and Close.
Create a subaccount in the New account panel
- Select the Save account under ▼ dropdown, then select the parent account you want to move the account under.
- In the Tax form section ▼ dropdown, select the detail type that best fits the transactions you want to track.
- Enter a name in the Account name field.
- (Optional) Enter a description in the Description field.
- In the Starting date and opening balance section, select the date for your opening balance. Then, enter your opening balance in the Account balance field.
Note: Make sure that your account info in QuickBooks matches your actual bank or credit card account. - Select Save.
Change an existing account into a subaccount
- Go to Settings, then select Chart of accounts.
- Find the account you want to edit.
- In the Action column, select the View register menu▼. Then, select Edit.
Note: Depending on your account view, you’ll either see the Account or the Edit account panel.
