Create a new subaccount

In Quickbooks Online, you can create a subaccount under a parent account. This lets you break down your income, expenses, and other account types.

Note: You can create up to five subaccounts under one parent account.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Go to Settings Settings gear icon., then select Chart of accounts (Take me there).
  2. Select New.
  3. Enter an Account name
  4. Select an Account type, and then choose the Detail type from the dropdowns.

  5. Check Make this a subaccount, then choose the Parent account it should be under.

  6. If you choose a Bank, Assets, Credit card, Liabilities, or Equity account, enter Opening Balance, and fill out the starting date in the As of field.
  7. (Optional) Add a Description to add extra information about this account. 
  8. Select Save

Change an existing account into a subaccount

  1. Go to Settings, then select Chart of accounts.
  2. Find the account you want to edit. 
  3. In the Action column, select the View register menu▼. Then, select Edit.
  4. Check Make this a subaccount, then choose the Parent account it should be under.
  5. Select Save.
