Find Out Why Someone Unsubscribed

If you have the unsubscribe reason survey enabled, your contacts will receive a poll after they unsubscribe from your emails. It's not required, but responses we receive are stored in a report for you to review.

In this article, you will learn how to view the results of the unsubscribe reason survey.

Before you start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

  • Make sure you're familiar with how the unsubscribe process works in Mailchimp. To learn more, check out About Unsubscribes.
  • Accidental unsubscribes and abuse complaints do happen occasionally, but we don't recommend that you send to unsubscribed contacts unless you know for sure that an error occurred.

View unsubscribe survey results

To view your unsubscribe reason survey results, follow these steps.

  1. Click Analytics, then click Reports.
  2. If you have more than one audience, click the Current audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.

  3. Find the email you want to work with, then click View Report.
  4. Click Activity in the navigation, then choose Unsubscribed from the drop-down menu.

This will bring up a summary of the results of the unsubscribe reason survey. To download these results, click Export as CSV.

When you export your survey results, the report will show the reasons why someone unsubscribed. Here is what those reasons mean.

  • No longer interested
    The contact no longer wants to receive these emails. It will appear as NORMAL.
  • Did not sign up
    The contacts never signed up for this mailing list. It will appear as NOSIGNUP.
  • Inappropriate content
    The contact believes the emails are inappropriate. It will appear as INAPPROPRIATE.
  • Spam
    The contact believes the emails are spam and should be reported. It will appear as SPAM.
  • Other
    The contact filled in a reason. It will appear as OTHER.
  • Unspecified
    The contact did not specify a reason. It will appear as UNSPECIFIED.

If you know the name or email address of a subscribed contact who's unsubscribed, you can find their reason for unsubscribing in the activity feed on their contact profile.
