About European Union VAT and Mailchimp
by Intuit• Updated 2 months ago
Mailchimp collects VAT (Value Added Tax) in compliance with local European Union (EU) and VAT regulations. If you’re located in the EU and you’re not VAT registered, you’ll see VAT charges on your billing estimates and receipts.
In this article, you’ll find information about EU VAT requirements, exemptions, and self-assessment options.
This article is provided as a resource, but it’s not tax advice. If you have questions about your specific tax requirements, we recommend that you consult a local tax professional.

How EU VAT works in Mailchimp
EU VAT is a consumption tax for goods and services bought and sold for use in the European Union. Non-EU businesses (like Mailchimp) are required to charge VAT on sales to consumers in the EU. You’re an EU consumer if your primary contact address is in the EU.
Mailchimp is registered with a VAT ID (EU372008134) within Ireland via a Non-Union One Stop Shop (OSS) registration. This lets us collect VAT from EU consumers even though we are not registered as a business in the EU. Ultimately, Mailchimp reports and pays all collected EU VAT via the OSS system as a non-union country.
Exemptions and self-assessed tax
If you use Mailchimp for business purposes, you may be able to manage your own VAT requirements. This is called self-assessment. Businesses that opt out of tax collection in Mailchimp are responsible for self-assessing and reporting their own VAT obligations. We verify VAT ID numbers to determine if your business qualifies for self-assessment. Add a valid VAT ID to your account, and you won't see VAT charges on future transactions.
