Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop for Windows and Mac

Learn how to upgrade QuickBooks Desktop for Windows and Mac.

Upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Enterprise, or Mac to the latest version. This helps you get the latest features/services you can use to manage your business more easily. Here's how.

Note: The upgrade might take some time. It depends on your internet speed and the size of your company file(s). You can also back up your company file(s) before you proceed:

When a new version of QuickBooks is available, you'll get a prompt when you open QuickBooks.

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop, then select Upgrade Now.
  2. If you want to keep your current QuickBooks version, select Keep old version on my computer. Then, select Let's go. Otherwise, leave it blank then select Let's go. QuickBooks downloads, installs, and activates the new version for you.
  3. When the upgrade finishes, select Open QuickBooks.

If you don’t see a prompt to upgrade QuickBooks, bring back all one time messages.

  1. Go to Edit, then select Preferences….
  2. Select General, then select My Preferences.
  3. Select Bring back all one time messages, then select OK.
  4. Close, then re-open QuickBooks. You’ll see the prompt to upgrade your QuickBooks subscription. Or;
  1. Sign in to your Intuit account to find your license info.
    Tip: You can also find the license info in the purchase confirmation email from QuickBooks.
  2. Use the QuickBooks Desktop Manager to upgrade to the latest version.
  3. When prompted, enter the license info.
  4. Follow the rest of the instructions to finish the upgrade.
  1. Select DISCOVERY HUB A computer keyboard with a meter on top of it. next to your profile icon, then select Upgrade to QuickBooks 2024.
  2. Select Proceed to upgrade, then select Upgrade Now.
  3. If you want to keep your current QuickBooks version, select Keep old version on my computer. Then, select Let's go. Otherwise, leave it blank then select Let's go. QuickBooks downloads, installs, and activates the new version for you.
  4. When the upgrade finishes, select Open QuickBooks.

If you’re the account owner or admin, you can install QuickBooks for yourself or other users. Otherwise, you can only install QuickBooks for yourself.

Note: If you have another hosting provider, reach out to them for immediate assistance.

When a new version of QuickBooks is available, you'll get a prompt when you open QuickBooks. Make sure you’re in single-user mode.

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop, then select Upgrade for Free.
  2. Select Let’s go. This automatically downloads and installs the new version of QuickBooks.
  3. When the upgrade finishes, select Open QuickBooks.
  4. Activate or register the new QuickBooks version.

Note: QuickBooks for Mac automatically keeps the old version on your computer.

If you don’t see a prompt to upgrade when you open QuickBooks, follow these steps.

  1. From the Help menu, select Upgrade QuickBooks….
  2. Select Upgrade for Free.
  3. Select Let’s go. This automatically downloads and installs the new version of QuickBooks.
  4. When the upgrade finishes, select Open QuickBooks.
  5. Activate or register the new QuickBooks version.
