Link your American Express Business account to QuickBooks Online

Learn how to link your American Express Business account to QuickBooks Online to access and download your recent transactions.

Manage your online bank connection to QuickBooks so you can automatically download transactions. This helps you keep your bank feeds up to date.

Note: If you’re a Delegate user and a Non-Account Holder authorized to link the accounts in Intuit products, select the American Express (Delegate) provider to link your account. If you previously connected to a different American Express provider, disconnect it and reconnect to the American Express (Delegate) provider to maintain bank feed service.

Create an American Express account in QuickBooks

Sign in to your account.
Go to Settings and select Chart of accounts.
Select New, then enter the account name.
Select Credit Card or Deposit Account in the Account Type ▼ dropdown.
Note: Enter the opening balance and start date to maintain accurate financial records.
Select Save.

Connect your American Express Business Card or Checking account

Connect with QuickBooks Online

Sign in to your account.
Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions.
Select Connect for a first-time account setup. If you connected an account before, select Link account.
Select an option based on your American Express user type:
- For a primary account holder, select American Express.
- For a delegate user, select American Express (Delegate).
Select Continue, then sign in with your American Express user ID and password.
Select the accounts you want to connect to QuickBooks.
Select the account type in the Account Type ▼ dropdown.
Select the date range for the download.
Select Connect.

Connect with QuickBooks Solopreneur

Sign in to your account.
Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions.
Select Link account.
Select an option based on your American Express user type:
- For a primary account holder, select American Express.
- For a delegate user, select American Express (Delegate).
Select Continue, then sign in with your American Express user ID and password.
Select the accounts you want to connect to QuickBooks.
Select the account type in the Account Type ▼ dropdown.
Select the date range for the download.
Select Connect.

Note: You can link one American Express Business account to your QuickBooks company and connect multiple accounts. If you have both personal and business accounts, connect them one at a time.

Disconnect your account

Disconnect from QuickBooks Online

Sign in to your account.
Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions.
Select the tile for one of your American Express accounts.
Select the Edit ✎ icon, then Edit account details.
Check the box for Disconnect this account on save.
Select Save.

Disconnect from QuickBooks Solopreneur

Sign in to your account.
Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions.
Select the New transaction ▼ dropdown.
Select Manage connections.
Select the three-doticon, then select Unlink.

Switch from tracking multiple American Express accounts to one parent account

Track all American Express cards in one main account right after you reconcile them.

Sign in to your account.
Disconnect all of your American Express accounts.
Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions.
Select Link account.
Search and select American Express.
Select the parent account for the American Express account.
Download the past transaction. You have two ways to manage past transactions.
- Download using parent account:
  a. Select the day right after your latest American Express account reconciliation.
  b. Complete the steps on the screen to link the parent account.
  
  Note: QuickBooks downloads transactions up to your last reconciliation. Disconnected American Express accounts retain past transactions and the new account tracks new transactions.
- Download from the individual American Express accounts in the parent account.
  Contact your accountant to create a journal entry. They'll balance the old transactions with the new parent account. After creating the entry,
  
  a. Go to Transactions, then select Chart of accounts.
  b. Select the individual American Express account.
  c. In the Action tab ▼ dropdown, select Make inactive.
  
  Note: The new American Express parent account should be the only account with American Express transactions. This keeps QuickBooks from counting transactions twice.

Get help with common issues

Grayed out American Express accounts

The account is already connected to another QuickBooks Online company. An American Express account can only connect to one company at a time.
The QuickBooks connection is incomplete, which may cause it to stop suddenly or close the browser unexpectedly.

To connect your American Express account to another company:

Sign in to your account.
Open the QuickBooks company it's currently connected to.
Disconnect your American Express account.
Connect to your American Express account.

If you can't connect, delete the grayed-out account from the American Express website.

Go to the American Express website, then sign in to your account.
Select the Account Services tab.
Select Security & Privacy.
Select Manage Partner Permissions, then Intuit to expand the section.
Select Disconnect.
Connect your American Express account to QuickBooks Online.

Missing Transactions

Sign in to your account as an admin.
Disconnect your American Express account.
Connect to your American Express account.

Note: If transactions are still missing after you reconnect, enter them manually.

American Express syncs your transactions daily. Missing data can take up to 10 business days to transfer. If it's over 10 business days, contact us and share the details of the missing transactions:
