If you're using QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2018 or later, you can transfer your license number using the migration tool, @stytch626. Let's collaborate to move your QBDT to the new computer.

The migrator tool assists you in creating a complex password to secure all the data transferred to your new computer. Additionally, it enables you to copy the last three company files you opened, along with all relevant supporting files, to a USB flash drive. The tool will also download the appropriate version of QBDT for your new computer and set it up with your files.

Since you plan to upgrade to Windows 11, keep in mind that versions work best with this operating system are QBDT 2022 and later.

To proceed with the transfer, it's advisable to back up your company file to secure a copy of your data. After that, you're ready to set up and use the migration tool.

To begin, perform these steps on the old computer:

  1. In QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Utilities. Choose Move QuickBooks to another computer.
  2. Hit I'm Ready and make a one-time password.
  3. Follow the instructions to pick the USB flash drive you’ll use and wait for the files to be copied.

Then, start the migration on the new computer. Here's how:

  1. Insert the USB flash drive. The Migrator Tool won’t open automatically due to Windows security restrictions.
  2. Open the flash drive, then double-click the Move_QuickBooks.bat file to start the migrator.
  3. Enter the password you created and click Let's go.
  4. Wait for the Migrator Tool to finish. The duration will depend on your computer's speed, internet connection, and the size of your company file(s).
