Allow me to clarify everything so you can smoothly assign classes to your transactions and items accordingly, Deadwood.
The procedures provided by my colleague are for QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Instead of Assigning classes to Names, Accounts, or Items, you can leave this option unchecked when enabling the Use class tracking for transactions feature:
As shown on the visual reference I've shared, the dropdown field beside the Assign classes to option greys out when disabled. Despite that, you can still generate classes for each event and apply them directly to your transactions.
Furthermore, the Class 25 you've seen from the previous reply's screenshot is just a sample class name.
On the other hand, if you have multiple items with different designated classes, you can add the Class to each item line instead of the whole transaction. The system will allow you to use one per transaction or item line.
You can utilize the Class field on the transaction page's Header if all your items belong to a single class category:

For multiple items with different classes, use the Class column for each line item individually:

Still, it's advisable to seek guidance from an accounting professional to ensure you've recorded these entries accordingly in QuickBooks.
Additionally, the Class field is shown differently on each transaction type. It's visible in the Header and the Items/Expenses column of the Bill page. Also, its template can't be directly modified, unlike the following forms below:
- Invoice
- Sales Receipt
- Estimate
- Statement
- Purchase Order
- Credit Memo
- Payment Receipt
- Bill Payment
- Sales Order
- Build Assembly
Finally, you can track your transactions assigned to classes by running class-related reports. For more information, check out this article: Filter, sort, or total your reports by Class.
