OAuth and changes to online bank connections

by Intuit4 Updated 5 days ago

We're making it even easier to keep your books up to date when you connect QuickBooks Online to banks using a new service called OAuth. Many banks and services are making the switch to OAuth in order to improve online banking for QuickBooks Online customers. The benefits include faster connections and easier sign-ins.

Which banks and services use OAuth?

• BMO (Encountering a BMO 377 notice? Learn more here.)

• AMEX

This list will expand to include most banks and other services.

When will my bank switch to OAuth?

Each bank is on its own schedule. You will be informed via email and in-product notification when your bank is ready.

Once you receive your notification you typically have one month (30 calendar days) to complete the switch.

What should I do to get ready for the switch?

There's nothing you need to do right now. When your bank is ready to switch to OAuth, you will receive an email and a notification on the QuickBooks Online Bank transactions (Take me there) menu informing you how to update your connection.

Is switching mandatory?

Since Intuit is partnering with the banks to build this new and more reliable connection, we need everyone to make the switch. Individuals cannot opt-out.

What if I don't make the switch to OAuth?

If you don't update your connection, you won't be able to synchronize your connected accounts or get new transactions.

Do I still get my old transactions with OAuth?

Absolutely. In the past, banks let you download up to 90 days of historical transactions. Now some banks let you download up to two years of historical transactions.

How do I update my connection when it's time to switch?

If your bank already uses OAuth, you'll have the most up-to-date connection.

Once you get an email or notification that your bank is ready to switch, undertake the following steps:

  1. Log in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Go to Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there). A notification that your connection is getting an update displays.
  3. Select the Update now option. Your bank's website opens in a new browser.
  4. Sign in as the primary account user and authorize the connection. Click here to learn more about who is eligible to set up OAuth.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to switch to OAuth.

What do I need to do after accepting the switch request?

Your bank sends us a data token so QuickBooks Online can start downloading your transactions. We'll use this token instead of your sign-in info to make the connection. This way, even if you make changes on your bank's website, we can still download your transactions.

What should I do if I see an error when updating my connection?

Review this support article if you see an error while connecting your account or downloading transactions.
