I just found out that ProFile will begin limiting access to previous 12 years only and that once I install the most recent update, I won't be able to access the other years' files.
I would like to know if there is going to be ANY way of accessing those 12 years + files, or they will be, for all intents and purposes, 'gone'?
Whereas it's not possible to file or amend tax returns which are over 10 years old, each year I have a number of clients who ask me to access their tax files which are over 20 years old. Even recently I wrote letters regarding two of my clients, in which I detailed their employment/self employment history for well over 12 years. I believe that those letters were required by their insurance companies.
Therefore, I am really disappointed with this implementation. I believe that there SHOULD be a way of accessing files older than 12 years, even if it takes longer and requires more work.
I'd appreciate your reply.
Thanks,
Jack
Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
The ProFile team made the hard decision to limit ProFile to 12 years to improve performance. There is more information here
For users that regularly require access to affected files a dedicated computer running and older version of ProFile , such as 2020.0.0 or earlier would be required. In version 2020.1.0 or higher, there is no way to access the affected files.
I apologize for the inconvenience but hope this helps
Thanks for your reply. So, my next question is, how is it possible to download Profile version 2020.0.0? I'd like to install it on my old computer.

This is just perfect !!!
I am trying to work out recapture of CCA for a farm client who sold their farm in 2020 and there is a big Effing hole between 2001 and 2009 !!!!!
I thought we had access to our digital tax files forever.
I'd like to further comment that I would not call this a "hard decision" on Intuit's part, but more of an irresponsible or reckless decision to remove this access without first notifying its paying customers of the decision. Notification, coming in the form of an email from "Intuit Profile Tax" advising of this new policy, like they send out emails when a new release is available, when they are having sales on the software, or when it's time for me to renew. Not just some policy statement buried on their website that only a properly formatted search can find. Yes.... I had to "Google" what happened to my old tax returns.
These old tax files are definitely not readable by the updated Profile software in its current form. The software returns an "Unrecognized file format error" if it is open and you try to load a Profile T1 return for 2007 or earlier.
Lets say I am able to track down a pre-2020 version of Profile by calling the suggested 1-800 number. Am I able to install multiple instances of Profile on my computer? I would think not. What about licencing? If I have another computer laying around that I can install an older version of Profile on, can I use my existing licence code for that or do I need to go through the "suspend my licence" process on my main computer every time I need access to an old tax file?
Obviously we don't prepare T1 returns and T2 return for tax years 2001 through 2007 any longer. However, business and rental clients do have fixed asset additions and disposals during those years, and not having access to accurately track additions & disposals, as well as properly calculate recaptured capital cost allowance after a property or business sale is more than just an "inconvenience" to your Profile customers.
I would have never thought we would have been deliberately locked out of our old tax files. It's ironic that I can quite easily access to my Taxbyte T1 returns for the years 1992 through 2000 on any computer.
Like many other Profile users, I started from "Greenpoint" decades ago & this is the first time of consider to give it up. As long as our "old" Profile files work with the existing OS (mine is Windows 10), I don't understanding why Intuit makes it difficult for paid customers of those years on them at all.
Besides the mentioned assets & other T1 data issues, T2 user likes me can't assess any files before the 2005 years now. Bad....
Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
The decision to limit to the previous 12 years was made to improve ProFile performance. At this time the solutions available to access older files is to have us print a return for you, or to install an earlier version of ProFile and activate with an older license. For either of these two solutions please call us at 1-800-452-9970 for an agent to assist.
I apologize for the inconvenience but hope this helps
