Have a Client that is a Canadian Citizen and is going to University in USA.
Where would I claim this?
Would I use form T2202 and input in Box 26 - Tuition Fees paid to Foreign Educational Institutions or
would I input this under TL11D?
I have a form from US - Form 1098-T, but it only shows Tuition amount paid, doesn't show how many months.
Please advise.
There are specific requirements if your client attends a US educational institute (for example, must be a University, not just a college, etc) and you need a specific form from that educational institute (TL11A). The number of months for federal purposes is irrelevant as there is no longer an education credit, just a tuition credit. Here is what CRA says, but you should check the publication available for students for more details. If you get the correct form, the tuition gets recorded on the same schedule as your Canadian tuition - remember to convert to Canadian $$.
To claim your tuition fees you must have received one of the following forms from your educational institution:
Contact your educational institution if you have not received one of these forms. When you ask your foreign educational institution to fill out and certify one of these forms, refer them to Information sheet RC190, Information for Educational Institutions Outside Canada, for instructions. You do not have to attach a certified form to your Income Tax and Benefit Return, but keep it in case we ask to see it later.
