Hi, my clients have both children from previous relationships, but when I try to enter the eligible dependent for the right parent, it always switches back to the partner that has the lowest income, even if it isnt the childs parent. What do I do wrong? I even tried to do a separated declaration for the mom, and when its by herself, she gets the credits for her child, but as soon as I click living common law and add the partners income, it all goes to him.
Thank you
Hi,
you can not claim an amount for eligible dependant if you are married.
One of the conditions to claim amount for eligible dependant is: You did not have a spouse or common-law partner or, if you did, you were not living with them, supporting them or being supported by them.
From CRA : Can you claim an amount for an eligible dependant?
Were you single, divorced, separated or widowed and supporting a dependant who lived with you in a home that you maintained, at any time in the tax year?
