Windows Server 2008 support is ending

As of January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows Server 2008. This means that computers running on Windows Server 2008 will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.

At Intuit, the security of our customers’ data is a top priority. To help customers safeguard their personal information, like their National Insurance number and bank account information, we strongly recommend that desktop customers using Windows Server 2008 upgrade their operating system to newer versions of Windows Server, before installing their product.

Yes, Microsoft’s decision to no longer provide security updates or support to PCs running Windows Server 2008 also impacts QuickBooks Desktop Plus products.

You can still use older versions of QuickBooks Desktop. However, upgrading from Windows Server 2008 to newer versions of Windows Server helps to protect your QuickBooks Desktop data, including your customers' and employees' sensitive information.

If you’re upgrading from Windows Server 2008 to new versions of Windows Server and want to know how an upgrade may impact other software you use, check the system requirements for that specific software to see if it supports your new version of Windows Server.

Desktop software is a program installed on the computer itself that runs via the operating system. Online software is stored on the web and runs through an internet browser.

Visit Microsoft’s Windows Server 2008 site if you need help updating Windows on your PC.

Your other software should work with an upgraded operating system. Check the system requirements for each one to see if it supports your new operating system version.

While it is possible to use QuickBooks in an “offline mode,” our system requirements for all current versions of QuickBooks do call for an online connection. We cannot guarantee full QuickBooks functionality without an internet connection.

Older versions of Windows are already out of date, and are also no longer receiving security updates. If you are using an older version of Windows, we strongly recommend that you upgrade to newer versions of Windows Server to protect your QuickBooks Desktop data, including your customers' and employees' sensitive information.

Most hosting providers will upgrade their systems to move to newer versions of Windows Server.

If you’re not sure what version your hosting provider is using or what their plans are for upgrading to newer versions of Windows Server, you should contact them for more information.

These versions of QuickBooks Desktop (2018 and earlier) have not been tested with newer versions of Windows Server. We recommend upgrading to the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop to ensure compatibility.

You don’t need to uninstall QuickBooks Desktop before you start. However, we do recommend that you backup your company files using an external drive or a backup service such as Intuit Data Protect before you begin the upgrade.
