Fix issues when deactivating bank feeds

Find out what to do when you can’t deactivate your bank account’s online services in QuickBooks Desktop.

When you deactivate bank feeds for an account, the lightning bolt (Windows) or blue circle (Mac) disappears beside the bank account's name in the Chart of Accounts. If you can still see it, this means the bank feeds is still active for the account.

Important: Before you proceed with the following solutions, make sure to create a backup of your Windows or Mac company files.

Solution 1: Re-sort your lists

Re-sort your list to make the accounts go back to their default order and undo changes you made. This can often repair issues in your list that prevents you from deactivating bank feeds.

Solution 2: Verify and rebuild your company file

Solution 3: Deactivate bank feeds using Excel

If you still can’t deactivate bank feeds, here’s a manual process where you edit the file in excel, then import it in QuickBooks to deactivate bank feeds.

Note: If you’re in a multi-user setup, make sure to switch to single-user mode. To change, go to the File menu, then select Switch to Single user mode.

Step 1: Export Chart of Accounts

  1. Sign in to your company file as an admin.
  2. Go to File and select Utilities.
  3. Select Export, then Lists to IIF Files.
  4. Select Chart of Accounts, then OK.
  5. Browse to where you want to save the file.
  6. Enter a filename, then select Save.

Step 2: Edit the IIF file in Excel

  1. Open Microsoft Excel, then go to File and select Open. Then browse to the folder where you saved the IIF file.
    Note: If you can’t find the IIF file, select All Files in File type.
  2. Select the IIF file, then Open.
  3. In the Text Import Wizard, select Next, then Next, and then Finish.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page until you see QB ONLINE.
  5. Change Y to N for all the banking columns:
    • OLBANKING
    • OLBILLPAY
    • OLENABLED
    • OLTAB
  6. Go to File, then select Save. Select Yes to keep using the current format, then close Excel.

Step 3: Import the IIF file to QuickBooks

Note: For more details on how to import IIF files, see Improved IIF Import.

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to File, then select Utilities.
  3. Select Import, then IIF Files.
  4. Browse to the location of your IIF file.
  5. Select the IIF file, then Open.
  6. Select OK to confirm the import was successful.

To make sure that bank feeds is deactivated, check if the lightning bolt is gone. Go to Lists, then select Chart of Accounts.

Step 1: Export Chart of Accounts

  1. Sign in to your company file as an admin.
  2. Go to File, select Export, then Lists to IIF Files.
  3. Enter the name of the file.
  4. Select Save, then Ok.
    Note: When you get a prompt to back up the company file, you can cancel if you already have one.

Step 2: Edit the IIF file in Excel

  1. Open Microsoft Excel.
  2. Go to File, select Open, then browse to the folder where you saved the IIF file.
    Note: If you can’t find the IIF file, select All Files in File type.
  3. Select the IIF file, then Open.
  4. In the Text Import Wizard, select Next, then Next, and then Finish.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page until you see QB ONLINE.
  6. Change Y to N for all the banking columns:
    • OLBANKING
    • OLBILLPAY
    • OLENABLED
    • OLTAB
  7. Go to File, then select Save. Select Yes to keep using the current format, then close Excel.

Step 3: Import the IIF file to QuickBooks

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to File.
  3. Select Import, then From IIF Files.
  4. Browse to the location of your IIF file.
  5. Select the IIF file, then Open.
  6. Select Ok to confirm the import is successful.

To make sure that bank feeds is deactivated, check if the blue circle is gone. Go to Lists, then select Chart of Accounts.
