Fix expired credit card error

SOLVEDby QuickBooks10Updated December 01, 2022

Learn what to do when you get an expired credit card error message while processing a customer's credit card transaction in QuickBooks Online.

If you have QuickBooks Payments and you see a credit card error message that says incorrect expiration date or expired card, don’t worry, it could mean that the physical card has expired but your customer's credit card account is still active.

To get back in business, find out which of the possible reasons is causing the error message, then reprocess the payment.

Step 1: Identify what’s causing the error message

This error message appears:

Even though your customer’s invoice shows the correct date, the card still gives an expired card error if the date on the computer is incorrect.

  1. Correct the system clock.
    • For Windows 10, set your time and time zone.
    • For older versions of Windows
      1. On the Windows taskbar, find and select the system clock.
      2. Select Change date and time settings link.
      3. On the Date and Time window, select Change time zone.
      4. Choose your time zone, then OK.
      5. To sync time and date, select Internet Time, then select Change settings.
      6. Select Update now, then select OK.
  2. Sign out from QuickBooks Online, then sign in again.
  3. Process the credit card payment.

Advise your customer to contact the issuer of the card. They may have sent out the replacement card in the mail already. If not, they can request for a new one.

To settle the payment, suggest other payment options in step 2.

Step 2: Reprocess customer’s payment using other options

To avoid late payment, request other payment options such as in-person or online.
