Edit Email URLs

by Intuit3 Updated 3 weeks ago

Sharing links to your sent emails is a great way to promote your content and get the most out of your email marketing. You can edit your shareable email URLs so people know where they're headed when they click your link.

In this article, you'll learn how to edit the URLs for your emails.

Before you start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

  • Make sure you're familiar with campaign pages.
  • All users can edit their email URLs. Paid users can also include their verified email domain.
  • We generate your email URLs when you send your email. You can preview the URL in the email builder, but it won't be activated until you send.
  • Sent email URLs can be edited, but only twice.

About email URLs

Email URLs link directly to your hosted campaign page. A campaign page is the browser-based version of a sent email. Parts of the URL for a sent email are customizable.

All email URLs include the domain mailchi.mp, and a URL path with 2 parts. The first part is an identifier unique to your audience, and the second part defaults to your email subject line.

Here's the anatomy of an email URL:

mailchi.mp/identifier/email-subject

Your customization options depend on your account type.

Free Accounts

If you have a free account, you can edit the subject line part of the URL. To customize the randomly generated alpha-numeric string, you'll need to upgrade to a paid account.

Here's an example of what an email URL could look like for a free account.

Paid accounts

If you have a paid account, you can edit the subject line part of the URL and the verified domain. Use the verified domain to promote your brand and make your URLs more recognizable to your audience when you share them online. By default, URLs include the verified domain from the audience's From email address.

Branding your URLs with a verified email domain is done on a per-audience basis. You'll be prompted to do this when you create a new audience. You can also update the URLs for an existing audience in the audience settings or in the Share Your Email section of the email builder.

Stay compliant with email URLs

According to our Terms of Use and Copyright and Trademark Policy, you must be authorized to use any domain names, trademarks, or copyrights you include in your URLs. If we receive a complaint that you're using a domain name or other intellectual property that you don't have the right to use, we'll investigate the complaint. We may suspend or terminate your account for violating our policies.

Best practices for email URLs

The main benefit of customizable email URLs is to make them more recognizable to your audience. Here are a few tips on crafting effective URLs to help you get the most out of this feature.

  • Match URLs to email content
Your URL should tell your audience where they're going when they click your link. It's usually a good idea to customize your URL with the subject line of your email or the main header of your email.
  • Shorter is usually better
People read online information quickly. Effective URLs should be 50-60 characters long. If your URL is much longer than that, think about how you could rewrite it. Focus on your keywords and vital information.
  • Make it readable
You've probably seen unreadable URLs. They have long strings of numbers and special characters and don't tell you much about where the link will take you. When you customize your URL, use complete words and avoid meaningless numbers and symbols.
  • Skip stop words
You might want to shorten and simplify your URL by removing stop words such as "and" or "the." These words usually aren't needed to understand the URL. Take readability and length into consideration when deciding whether you should remove skip words.

Add a verified domain to email URLs

We'll ask you to customize your email URLs with a verified domain when you create a new audience in your account.

To update the email URLs for an existing audience, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click All contacts.
  2. If you have more than one audience, click the Audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. In the Email settings section, click Edit next to Email campaign URL.
  5. On the Email campaign URL pop-up modal, use the drop-down and choose the verified domain you want to use.
  6. Click Save email campaign URL.

All set! Now when you send to your audience, your shareable email URLs will include your verified domain name.

Edit an email URL

The steps to edit the subject line part of an email URL depend on whether you’re working with a draft or sent email.

Draft email

To edit the URL of a regular draft email, follow these steps.

  1. Click Campaigns, then click All campaigns.
  2. Open the draft email you want to work with.
  3. Scroll to the Share Your Email section and click Edit next to your email link.
  4. In the Edit Email URL pop-up modal, edit the email subject line part of the URL. In this example, it's Check out our big plant sale.

If you have a paid plan, you can also choose from your verified domains to update the URLs for every email you send to your audience.
  5. Click Save.

All set! After you send your email, your URL will display when recipients view your email in a web browser.

Sent email

If you've already sent your email, you can edit the subject line portion of the existing email URL from the Campaigns page in your account. Don't worry, this won't affect email statistics or link functionality if you've already shared the original email URL. Anyone who clicks the old URL will be redirected to your new, customized URL.

To edit the subject line portion of a sent email URL, follow these steps.

  1. Click Campaigns, then click All campaigns.
  2. Open the email you want to work with.
  3. Click the Details tab.
  4. Click the pencil icon next to the Email URL.
  5. In the Update Email URL pop-up modal, enter the new subject line in the field and click Save.

Awesome job! Now your new email URL is active and ready for you to share around the web.
