Update a Contact Profile
by Intuit•2• Updated 2 weeks ago
As your audience grows, it's important to maintain up-to-date information about your contacts. Visit a contact’s profile at any time to view their info, or make updates to it. Up-to-date contact info can help keep your audience healthy and increase engagement.
In this article, you'll learn how to update contact information for an individual profile and help your subscribed contacts update their own information.
Before you start
Here are some things to know before you begin this process.
- If you want to update multiple profiles at one time, use our auto-update import feature. To learn more, check out how to import contacts to Mailchimp.
- When a contact's email address is updated, campaign activity connected to their previous email address will be lost.
- Audiences in Mailchimp function independently and don't share data. If you have a contact who is in multiple audiences, you'll need to update their profile in each audience.
- Some data can't be changed, like when and how the contact is added or updated in the audience. Unsubscribed or cleaned contacts can't have their profiles updated.
Unsubscribe, export, archive, or delete
Click on a contact to view their profile. Use the Actions drop-down to unsubscribe, export, or add VIP status. Click Remove to access the Archive or Permanently delete actions.
Update profile information
On any contact's profile, edit the first name, last name, email address, and other audience field data.
To edit a subscribed contact's audience field data, follow these steps.
- Click Audience, then click All contacts.
- If you have more than 1 audience, click the Current audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
- Find the contact you want to edit and click their email address to view their profile.
- Click Edit next to the section you want to update.
- Make the necessary changes, then click Save.
All set! Now the information for your contact is up-to-date.
Remove certain system-predicted data from contact profile pages across audiences when you edit the sections they appear in. This info includes predicted demographics, estimated location, language, and favorite email client. If you remove any of these fields, it'll permanently delete them from any contact profile associated with that email address in any audience in your account.
Use the update profile merge tag in your emails
Your audience includes a form your contacts can use to update their own profile. Through the update profile form, contacts can opt in or out of groups you’ve created. If you use groups to find subscriber preferences, contacts can use the update profile form to choose how often they hear from you, which can reduce unsubscribe rates.
Every email you send should include an "update your preferences" link so your contacts always have an opportunity to make changes. We automatically include the |UPDATE_PROFILE| merge tag in the default footer content block. You can also add an update preferences link to any other section of your email.
If you create a preferences center for an audience, it'll replace the update profile form. When a contact clicks on the "update your preferences" link or on any other link you’ve created with the |UPDATE_PROFILE| merge tag, we’ll send them a separate email with a link to your preferences center.
