Learn what to do if you see error 401 in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you see error 401 about an unauthorized request in QuickBooks Desktop, don’t worry. This is easy to fix.

You may see error 401 when you do things like:

  • Sign in to your company file or accountant toolbox
  • Register during QuickBooks installation
  • Send an invoice with QuickBooks Payments

The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized

When you see the error message:

  1. Select No to close the error message window.
  2. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest version.
