Upgrade to QuickBooks Desktop 2024 from within QuickBooks

Learn how to upgrade to QuickBooks 2024 from within the program.
Upgrading to the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop ensures you benefit from new features, improved performance, and enhanced security. Before you upgrade, check your system specifications to make sure your computer will support QuickBooks 2024.
Note: These steps are only applicable if you are on version 2022 or 2023 and use QuickBooks in single user mode. If you use QuickBooks in a multi-user environment, use this article to upgrade.
When you open your QuickBooks Desktop, the first thing you need to do is click on the Upgrade QuickBooks button on the homepage of your software.
- Select Upgrade QuickBooks.
- Select Find out what’s new to see what’s new in the new version of QuickBooks.
- It's important to understand the new features and improvements that are included in the new version of QuickBooks Desktop before you upgrade. This will help you make an informed decision and understand how the new features will benefit your business accounting.
- Select system requirements to check your computer's compatibility for the new upgrade.
- If your computer is compatible, you can proceed to the next step.
- You have 2 upgrade options. Choose the most suitable option and follow the instructions to complete the upgrade successfully.,
- Upgrade Now to upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop to a new version immediately or
- Schedule an Upgrade to install your upgrade at a later scheduled time.
- Select Keep the old version of QuickBooks on my computer.
If you select Upgrade Now, follow the below process
- Select Continue and wait for few minutes untill the upgrade is installed.
- After installation, open your company file in the older version of QuickBooks and save a backup.
- QuickBooks admin now needs to open the Company File on the new version with their admin credentials to upgrade it.
- Once QuickBooks and the company file are upgraded to the new version, uninstall the older version to complete the process.
If you select Schedule an upgrade, follow the below process
- Choose a convenient date and time for the upgrade.
- When you select continue you’ll receive a confirmation message about the scheduled upgrade.
- You’ll receive a reminder nudge about the scheduled upgrade 7 days before (if eligible), one day before, and on the day of upgrade.
- You can also reschedule the upgrade at a later date if something important comes up.
- To reschedule, select Upgrade Scheduled. (The Upgrade QuickBooks button changes to Upgrade Scheduled after scheduling the upgrade).
- Select a new date and time to reschedule the upgrade. You can also cancel the upgrade from the same window.
What happens on the Day of Upgrade at the scheduled time?
- If you have QuickBooks open:
- You’ll receive a nudge to upgrade. You can select
- Upgrade now to upgrade immediately. You’ll see the progress of the upgrade.
- Reschedule to reschedule the upgrade for a later date.
- You’ll receive a nudge to upgrade. You can select
- If your computer is on but you have your QuickBooks closed:
- The upgrade will auto-start, and you can see the progress of the upgrade.
- If the computer is off:
- When you open the Company file next time, you get an option to install the upgrade now or install later.
Once the upgrade is installed, follow the these steps to complete the upgrade.
- Take a backup of the company file before you upgrade the company file.
- QuickBooks admin now needs to open the Company File on the new version with their admin credentials to upgrade it.
- Once QuickBooks and the company file are upgraded to the new version, uninstall the older version to complete the process.
