Upgrade to QuickBooks Desktop 2024 within the software

Learn how to upgrade to QuickBooks 2024 from within the QuickBooks software.

Enjoy new features, improved performance, and enhanced security when you upgrade to the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop.

Note: These steps are only for single users of QuickBooks Desktop for Windows versions 2022 and 2023. Mac users can follow the steps for QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus. QuickBooks with multiple users can upgrade here.

Prepare to upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows

  1. Go to your QuickBooks Desktop homepage.
  2. Open your company file.
  3. Select Upgrade QuickBooks.

  4. Select Find out what’s new.
    • Find the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop. Check out the new features and improvements before you upgrade.
  5. Check system requirements to find out what your computer needs for the upgrade.

Upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows

Make sure to back up your company file before you upgrade. There are two upgrade options to choose from.

  1. Select Upgrade now then select Continue. Wait for the upgrade to install.
  2. Open your company file in the older version of QuickBooks and save a backup.
  3. The QuickBooks admin will open the company file in the new version.  
  4. Once upgraded to the new version, uninstall the previous version. This completes the process.

  1. Select a date and time for the scheduled upgrade.
  2. Select Continue to receive a confirmation message on the scheduled upgrade.
  3. A prompt will remind you about the scheduled upgrade 7 days before (if eligible), one day before, or on the day of the upgrade.
  4. You can reschedule the upgrade at a later date, if something important comes up. Here’s how. 
    1. Select Upgrade Scheduled.
    2. Select a new date and time to reschedule the upgrade.
  5. You can also cancel the upgrade from the same window.

Note: Select Keep the old version of QuickBooks on my computer. This will store the old QuickBooks version in your computer.

  1. If your QuickBooks is open, you’ll receive a prompt to upgrade. You can select from these options.
    • Upgrade now to upgrade to the new version immediately. 
    • Reschedule to schedule the upgrade for a later date.

  2. If your computer’s on but you have your QuickBooks closed, the upgrade will start automatically. You’ll be able to  see the progress of the upgrade.
  3. If the computer is off, you’ll get an option to upgrade now or schedule the upgrade later. The upgrade will happen the next time you open the company file.

Upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus

In QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus, you'll find the Upgrade QuickBooks window when you open your company file. Here's how to upgrade.

  1. Select Upgrade for Free.
  2. Select Let’s go. This will download and install the new version of QuickBooks.
  3. Once done, select Open QuickBooks.
  4. Register the new QuickBooks version.

Note: The upgrade may take some time, depending on your internet speed and the size of your company files. The old version will remain on your computer.

If you don't see a prompt to upgrade your QuickBooks subscription, you can still upgrade. Here's how.

  1. Open your company file.
  2. Go to Help. 
  3. Select Upgrade QuickBooks.
  4. Select Upgrade for Free.
  5. Select Let’s go. This will download and install the new version of QuickBooks.
  6. Once done, select Open QuickBooks.
  7. Register the new QuickBooks version.
