Manage lead accountants

Learn how to set up or change lead accountants in QuickBooks Online Accountant.

Lead accountants handle their clients’ QuickBooks bookkeeping and act as their primary contact. You can assign or change a client’s lead accountant. Here’s how.

Assign a lead accountant to a client

A lead accountant is assigned in two ways:

In both cases, the lead accountant gets access to the client's books.

Tip: Other accountants at your firm can also do bookkeeping for the client if they have access to review their books.

Note: The lead accountant is different from the primary admin role. A person can have both roles though. You can also change the primary admin for a client's company file.

Change a client's lead accountant

  1. Go to Clients and select Client list (Take me there).
    Notes:
    • If you are using QuickBooks Online Accountant, go to Clients.
    • Only firm admins can assign lead accountants.
  2. Find the client you want to change the lead for.
  3. Select the ▼ dropdown from the Actions column, then select Edit leads.
  4. Select a new lead accountant from the Lead column ▼ dropdown.
  5. Select Save.

Assign multiple clients to the same lead accountant

  1. Go to Clients and select Client list (Take me there).
Note: If you are using QuickBooks Online Accountant, go to Clients.
  2. Find the client you want to change the lead for.
  3. Select the ▼ dropdown from the Actions column, then select Edit leads.
  4. Select the checkbox for each client.
  5. Select a lead accountant in the Assign to ▼ dropdown.
  6. Select Save.

Review your lead accountants
