Resolve the installer encountered an error, EXEAdapter error, or error 61686 when installing QuickBooks

A damaged Framework.xml file can cause the following errors when installing QuickBooks Desktop:

  • The installer encountered an error when running "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\Premier\QBooks" /quiet /norestart INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2011" QB LICENSENUM=####-####-####-###
  • Component: QuickBooks
    Location: "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\Premier\QBooks\windowsinstaller-kb93803.exe " EXEAdapter Error: InstallExe method received the system error from CreateProCess , command - "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\Premier\QBooks\windowsinstaller-kb93803.exe" /quiet /norestart INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2011" QB LICENSENUM=####-####-####-###
    Note: The Users path, INSTALLDIR path and LICENSENUM will vary. Error 61686 may also be displayed.

EXEAdapter.exe error mostly occurs when Microsoft .net framework is missing or damage on your windows operating system. Microsoft .NET Framework is a Microsoft component used by programs, such as QuickBooks, to integrate with Web applications. see Repair or reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework and start the installation again.

To fix the errors, perform the following steps in the order shown.

When installing QuickBooks from a download

  1. On your keyboard, press Windows+R to open the Command Prompt.
  2. Type in %temp% and select OK.
  3. Open the folder that has the name as the edition of QuickBooks you are installing (Pro, Premier, Enterprise).
    Note: If the edition folder is not in the Temp folder, re-run the QuickBooks installer. Once you are on the Welcome to QuickBooks screen, select Cancel.
  4. Open the QBooks folder.
  5. Right click the Framework.xml file and select Rename. Rename the file to Framework.xml.OLD.
  6. Download and save the new Framework.xml file to the QBooks folder.
  7. Go back to the installation folder (Pro, Premier, Enterprise) and run the setup.exe file.
    Note: If running the setup.exe file does not begin the installation, run the QuickBooks.msi file (located in QBooks folder).

When installing QuickBooks from a CD

  1. Copy the installer to your desktop.
    1. Insert the installation CD. If the InstallShield Wizard starts, close it.
    2. Browse to your CD directory.
    3. Select the folder that has the same file name as the QuickBooks edition you are installing (Pro, Premier, Enterprise).
    4. On your keyboard, press Ctrl+C to copy the folder.
    5. Right-click an empty space on your desktop and select Paste.
  2. Open the QBooks folder on your desktop.
  3. Right-click the Framework.xml file and select Rename. Rename the file to Framework.xml.OLD.
  4. Download and save the new Framework.xml file to the QBooks folder on your desktop.
  5. Run the setup.exe file (use the file saved on your desktop).
    Note: If running the setup.exe file does not begin the installation, run the QuickBooks.msi file (located in QBooks folder).
