What's happening with American Express connections?

Find out what's changing and what you can do to keep getting online banking transactions from American Express.

If you connect your American Express account to online banking, QuickBooks Online automatically downloads your latest transactions every day. It records the details so you don't have to enter transactions manually.

We're updating the American Express connection on May 20th, 2020. The update improves the speed and accuracy of downloaded bank transactions. It also adds some unique new features. To keep getting the latest transactions, you'll need to update a few things on your end.

What's being updated?

You'll be better able to manage your expenses along with your sales transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Now, any receipts you capture in the American Express® Business App automatically syncs with QuickBooks. Your captured receipts show up with your other downloaded transactions on the Banking menu.

Some things are changing. Transactions downloaded from American Express have a description and an amount. You won't see individual item details on them anymore.

What do I need to do to keep getting transactions from American Express?

You don't need to do anything yet.

When your American Express account is ready to update, we'll send you a few emails to let you know. You'll also see notifications in QuickBooks Online. Important: The primary account owner needs to do the update.

Follow the links in the email or notification. Or you can follow the steps here:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Go to the Banking menu or Transactions menu.
  3. Select the Update Connection link in the banner.
  4. Select Continue and sign in to your American Express account.
  5. Follow the onscreen steps.
  6. In the COA dropdown, make sure the account you use to track American Express transactions on your chart of accounts is selected. This should be the same account you used before.
  7. Select Connect.

Your American Express connection is up-to-date. You're ready to get back to business.

Note: If you connect both personal and business American Express accounts, you have to connect them one at a time. Follow the same steps for each of your American Express accounts.
