Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release

Install the latest maintenance release for your QuickBooks Desktop version to access the most current security updates and product improvements.

Follow these steps to check your version and install updates.

Check for the latest release

Verify if your software is already up to date.

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
2. Press F2 (or Ctrl+1) to open the Product Information window.
3. Check your current version and release number.
4. Compare it to the latest available release:
   • QuickBooks 2024: R18_60
   • QuickBooks 2023: R17_35

Method 1: Update within QuickBooks (Automatic)

You can set QuickBooks to download updates automatically or initiate an immediate update.

Schedule automatic updates

1. Go to Help and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
2. Select the Options tab.
3. Select Yes to enable automatic updates.
4. Select Close.

Run an immediate update

1. Go to Help and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
2. Select the Update Now tab.
3. Select Get Updates.
4. When the update finishes, restart QuickBooks.
5. When prompted to install the update, select Install Now.

Method 2: Update manually (Download site)

If you cannot update within the software, download the specific update file from the Intuit website.

1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
2. Go to the Downloads & Updates page.
3. Select the standard setup.
4. Select your Country, Product, and Version (Year).
5. Select Search.
6. Select Get the latest updates.
7. Open the downloaded file to install the update.
8. Restart your computer after installation.

Note: To update your server manager, refer to Install, Update, and Set up the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

Follow these steps to verify your release and install updates.

Check for the latest release

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
2. Press Command + 1 to open the Product Information window.
3. Compare your release to the latest version:
   
   • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2024: R10.2
   • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2023: R7.6

Method 1: Update within QuickBooks (In-product)

1. Go to the QuickBooks menu and select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
2. Select Install and Relaunch.

Note: To ensure future updates install automatically, select Automatically download and install updates in the future within the update window.

Method 2: Update manually (Download site)

Use this method if the in-product update fails or does not advance the release number.

1. Go to the Downloads & Updates page.
2. Select the standard setup.
3. Select your Country, Product, and Version (Year).
4. Select Search.
5. Select Get the latest updates.
6. Open the downloaded file to install the update.
7. Restart your computer.

Troubleshoot update issues

If the update fails or the release number does not change:

1. Download the update again using the Check for QuickBooks Updates menu.
2. If the issue persists, use Method 2 above to download the update directly from the website.
