Hello Bev, if you want to know of you are registered for MTD or not you will need to ring HMRC or sign into your gateway to find out. If you want to know if you have completed the process to authorise MTD submissions through QuickBooks we will be able to tell you this, you will just need to contact our Live Support team through this link, and provide the agent on the phone your vat registration number and then they will be able to check in the system for you.

Hi mtoneill, this information should still be accessible for you in your government gateway account, however HMRC would be able to confirm. :)

I have done everything recommended to re-establish our connection with HMRC for MTD. I have again today checked that we are connected on HMRC's own page - we are. I have followed the instructions and disconnected and reconnected in Quickbooks Online. I am still getting the client not authorised error message. I am at a loss as to what to try next. Can you help please?

Hi HBCrosby, thanks for joining this thread - what user type are you listed as in QuickBooks, and was the company registered for MTD with HMRC directly, or via your accountant?

I have spoken to our accountant and he reports that although they registered us with HMRC for MTD, the login details I am using are correct. I have checked and we are definitely registered and logged in with HMRC, the problem is getting QBO and HMRC to talk to each other! We have had no problem with our connection since starting to use QBO over two years ago.

Making Tax Digital
Hello Quickbooks. I have set up Quickbooks and think I have successfully connected to the HMRC as the badge Making Tax Digital Enabled appears and my correct VAT registration number is entered. However, the warning red arrow 'We can't connect to HMRC right now' appears and two old returns (which I filed and were paid through the old HMRC portal) come up and the return I need to do is nowhere to be seen. The 1/2/22 - 30/4/22 comes up as an Open Return with 'Take action' and I can't click anywhere to mark this as filed and paid. This was definitely completed on the HMRC portal, and I have received the money. Do you think I am not connected successfully to HMRC and I should disconnect Quickbooks and HMRC and try again? I don't understand why the return I need to do is nowhere to be seen and two old ones that have been completed and paid are showing up. I would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hello Lakeside4, thanks for posting on this thread, if the two returns that are showing have already been submitted to HMRC then it is just a case of having to mark them as filed in QBO so that it then opens the next return you need to submit. So to mark the return as filled this is what you need to do click on taxes> VAT>click on the return>then at the bottom right you should see the option in green to mark as filed or it might say submit return and there is a drop down arrow, click the drop down arrow and it will have the option in there to mark as file. So once the returns have been marked as filed it will then open the return you need. If you have any issues please do not hesitate to get back with us.

Hi,
I have repeatedly completed the process as stated to successfully authorise Quickbooks to talk to HMRC and each time the MTD icon is showing green tick enabled. However the action required note remains red active. Client or agent not authorised.??????????

Hello there, @Donal11.
I can see how difficult this situation is for you, and I also appreciate your patience while performing the possible solution. I'm here to lay down information about authorising Quickbooks to talk to HMRC.
MTD in QuickBooks will need to be re-authorized every 18 months per HMRC guidelines. The following error message will display: "client or agent not authorised." for businesses that submit their returns for 18 months.
Firstly, you will be required to disconnect and re-authorise MTD.
- Click the Gear icon and select Accounts and settings. In Advanced, select Making Tax Digital.
- Once you have successfully disconnected, then reconnect. Make sure you are using the correct sign-in credentials.
- To check, sign in to the HMRC website. Once the Making Tax Digital message appears on the Homepage, the account is correct.
- Please note: You can also check the MTD credentials in your inbox and search for an email sent to you by Government Gateway.
- Enter your Government Gateway details for MTD for VAT.
- Select Give permission.
- Select Continue to return to QuickBooks.
Then, repeat the entire process of Authorizing QuickBooks to interact with HMRC.
If the issue is the same, I suggest contacting our support team. This way, they will be able to investigate this further. Check our support hours to contact us at a time convenient to you.
Refer to the steps below:
