Hello,
I am an individual that is preparing a Trust return.
It is a Joint Partner Trust (for my grandparents) - my Father is the Trustee.
I have been able to prepare the return and would like to EFile it.
I am unable to understand what the requirements are when transmitting the XML file directly from Profile. (I purchased the 1 return option).
Do I need a WAC that was assigned to the Trust?
Or do I need a WAC that was assigned to me personally?
Prior year, an accounting firm was able to efile, but this year I am doing it and I don't have a business number.
Thank you for any help!

Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
Filing a T3 return is XML transfer not e-file. T3 returns cannot be filed with a CRA e-file number. A trust account number and the associated Web Access Code, WAC, are used to access the CRA XML server. The WAC is issued by CRA and is assigned to the specific trust account number, so it is issued for the account number and not an individual. Information regarding obtaining a WAC from CRA is available here. Click on the Web Access Code hyperlink to view the section related to obtaining a WAC. T3 does not have a method for filing without a WAC like T2 does.
Hi,
For 2022 T3 e-file will be available for T3 returns: this is the same as 2021 T3 returns. XML is only available for filing T3 slips. Slip filing is a different process from T3 return filing, this has not changed from prior years.

Thank you!
I was able to obtain the WAC from the CRA website for the Trust.
One final question - if I transmit the XML T3 file to CRA online, do I also need to transmit the T3 slips in a separate upload?
Profile seems to have an option for transmitting the return, and a separate option for the slips.
Thank you
Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
Slip filing and return filing are separate, so the slips are not sent with the tax file submission. The T3 e-file menu has separate filing menu options for slips and return: slips and return are sent separately.
Hope this helps
Hello,
Thank you for the reply.
Is filing the slips required, or optional?
At the moment, I am getting a warning, as I submitted the return last night, and it has been less than 24 hours since then when I go to submit the T3 slip.
Should I proceed with filing the T3 slip as well - and if so, perhaps wait for 24 hours to pass?
Thank you.
Hi, thank you for using Intuit ProFile Community
There is no reason to wait between the filing of the slips and the return. The filing of the T3 return and slips are handle by different sections of CRA so, one filing is not related to the other.
Hope this helps
Hi Duncan,
I am hoping you are still active on these forums.
Last year, I filed a T3 return for my grandafther's trust using the single return option in Profile. I have again purchased the single filing license.
If I remember correctly, I used was able to transmit the XML file using Profile.
This year, the Profile software seems to be forcing me to try to EFILE - but I am not registered as an EFILE user, as I do not run a business and I strongly doubt CRA will grant me EFILE access.
Would you, or anyone else here be able to walk me through how I can electronically transmit this T3 return to CRA within Profile this year?
Thank you.
I have the exact same problem. I have a WAC but it won't create the xml file. How did you fix this?
Hi,
After speaking with Profile support on the phone, due to the switch to EFILE option with CRA this year, Profile didn't build the option to file the T3 return via XML into the 2021 software. We can still file the T slips via XML, but need to either use the 2020 software to file electronically, or print the return physically from the 2021 software and mail it in.
I mailed it in.
I left feedback in the 'suggestions' section of the Help menu form within the Software to include XML filing next year. The more people who leave this feedback the more likely they'll implement it next year. As a single T3 filing return option, I will not be buying the product next year if XML is not possible.
Hope this helps.
Hi,
CRA changed to e-file for submitting the T3 return. For tax year 2021 and later, e-file is the only option to file a T3 return. CRA will no longer accept an XML transfer for the T3 return. XML transfer is now only for T3 slips.
Hello and thank you for your reply.
If you take a look at my last few posts, you'll see that I understand that CRA changed to e-filing last year. I am wondering if it will be possible to use this software to EFILE a T3 return for 2022.
In 2021, this function was not built into the software.
Thank you,
Craig

So for 2022 tax year, the ONLY way to submit a T3 Trust return is to get an efile user and password from CRA? From talking to them, this can take up to 3 weeks and must be done every year. Is there another way to electronically file a T3 Return (not T3 slips)? Mine is due in 3 days
Hi,
I learned this the hard way last year. Electronic filing for T3 is only possible with an EFILE number from CRA now.
I used the software to complete the return, printed it physically, and mailed it in via Canada Post.
You could express post it, and as long as it is postmarked before the due date, you'll be OK.
Ya, and I do owe so as long as I can e transfer that (which I need to figure out how) that should be ok as long as payment is in before March 31st and the return is post marked before then too, correct?
I'm not 100% sure about payment - my trust pays out all it's income to it's beneficiaries, so no tax.
I would imagine if you pay it before March 31 in some way you'll be fine.
ok. unfortunately our beneficiaries are not of age yet so optimizing tax is tough until then....it's on the plan but in the meantime, I need to pay and adjust my holdings to be more tax advantageous
I did find out from CRA that you can do it through their "My Payments" online...Not through a bank like we can for T1 returns. Will see how that works.
Thanks!
Hi,
Paying online is the fastest way to make the payment for a T3 balance owing
