ReFILE or amend a T1 or T2 return in Pro Tax

QuickBooks knows that mistakes happen. If a return needs to be refiled or amended after it has already been transmitted, Pro Tax has the capability.

About ReFILE and amend language

A corrected T1 return undergoes ReFILE and an amended T2 return is amended.

Before you ReFILE or amend a return

it is always recommended to make a copy of the original return before you ReFILE/amend.

  1. Open the return in Pro Tax.
  2. Click on the Return actions drop-down menu.
  3. Select Duplicate Return.
  4. Follow the steps below to continue the ReFILE or amending.

ReFILE a T1 return

Before undertaking a T1 return, it is recommended to review the CRA article on ReFILE for electronic files. The article covers key items including:

  • benefits of ReFILE
  • conditions required to ReFILE
  • exclusions and limitations to ReFILE
  • supported tax years

Follow the instructions below to ReFILE a T1 return:

  1. Open a T1 return in Pro Tax.
  2. Make any required adjustments (for example, update slips if the client provided additional slips after the initial electronic filing occurred).
  3. Navigate to the Info page of the return.
  4. Click the Filing option.
  5. Select the Yes option when prompted to answer the question “Amended return? (T1Refile)”.
  6. Click Add New Form and select T1ReFILE.
  7. Enter the Date of ReFILE.

Note: you will be prompted to answer some survey questions from CRA regarding ReFILE. These questions are not mandatory and this component may be skipped.

  1. Reprint the T183 and acquire a signature from your client giving permission to ReFILE. This is mandatory as the T183 will now have a new balance/refund amount.
  2. Click on the Return actions drop-down menu.
  3. Select ReFILE.
  4. Print the provided confirmation for your records.

Amend a T2 return

  1. Open the return in Pro Tax.
  2. Enter any changes required on the return.

  6. Navigate to the T2Adjust form of the return.
  7. Review the worksheet and complete Description of changes.
  8. Click on the EFILE drop-down menu.
  9. Select Review & EFILE.
  10. Click File Federal return.
  11. Print the provided confirmation for your records.

Note: all confirmation numbers for T2 returns are stored under the Filing section of the Information tab.

Amend an At1 return

  1. Open the return in Pro Tax.
  2. Make any changes to the Federal and Alberta forms. Because data flows from the Federal to Alberta forms, it is recommended to complete updating the Federal forms before prior to the Alberta forms.

  4. Click Alberta.
  5. When prompted, answer Yes to the question Is this an amended return?
  6. Click the Add New form option and add an AEDI form to the return.

  8. Select the EFILE drop-down menu.
  9. Select Review & EFILE.
  10. Select File Alberta return to confirm amounts.

Frequently asked questions

What could prevent a successful ReFILE?

Under CRA regulations, all electronic filers must have a level 2 authorization with a client to allow ReFILE capabilities. Ensure you EFILE a T1013 form with level 2 authorization if you have not done so already.

I forgot to print my confirmation number, where can I find it?

Confirmation numbers are available on the individual return. All confirmation numbers for T2 returns are stored under the Filing section of the Information tab.
